Beyoncé Shock-Drops ‘Morning Dew (Donk)’ as B’Day Twentieth-Anniversary Countdown Begins

Beyoncé released “Morning Dew (Donk)” on Saturday, July 4, her first new song since Cowboy Carter.

Parkwood Entertainment announced the track as part of a 60-day countdown to Beyoncé’s birthday and the 20th-anniversary reissue of B’Day, the album she released on Sept. 4, 2006.

“Morning Dew (Donk)” arrived on streaming platforms at 9 a.m. EST with an official lyric video. Beyoncé wrote the song with Pharrell Williams, The-Dream and Darius Dixon, and produced it with Pharrell.

People identified the track as a previously unreleased song from Beyoncé’s 2013 self-titled era that leaked in 2023 and circulated among fans before Saturday’s official release.

Beyoncé Released the Official Lyric Video

The lyric video uses archival footage directed by Cliff Watts, a longtime Beyoncé collaborator who photographed her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover around her 25th birthday.

The video keeps the rollout tied to the mid-2000s period around B’Day, rather than introducing a new visual era. Parkwood has not announced the full reissue tracklist.

B’Day Turns 20 in September

B’Day was released worldwide on Sept. 4, 2006, Beyoncé’s 25th birthday. Parkwood said the album sold 541,196 copies in its first week and became Beyoncé’s second No. 1 project.

The original album included “Déjà Vu,” “Irreplaceable,” “Ring the Alarm” and “Beautiful Liar.” The anniversary edition will include “Morning Dew (Donk),” though other bonus tracks have not been announced.

‘Morning Dew (Donk)’ Had Been Discussed for Years

People said the track came from Beyoncé’s 2013 Beyoncé sessions and leaked in 2023. The Guardian noted that talk of a Beyoncé song called “Donk” dates back to 2014, after a track with that title was registered with ASCAP.

The July 4 version is the official release. It has the title “Morning Dew (Donk)” and confirmed credits from Beyoncé, Pharrell Williams, The-Dream and Darius Dixon.

Parkwood Did Not Announce Act III

The song immediately brought back speculation about Beyoncé’s next full album. ABC7, carrying CNN’s report, noted that fans have been waiting for Act III after Renaissance and Cowboy Carter.

The CNN report also pointed to the song’s opening reference to Prince’s Purple Rain, which some listeners connected to rock-era theories around Act III. Parkwood’s announcement did not include an Act III release date.
