Sam Raimi Nonetheless Hasn’t Heard About ‘Spider-Man four’ From Marvel

Attention Marvel: will you please let Sam Raimi know what is up with Spider-Man 4? Raimi directed a Spider-Man trilogy for Sony starring Tobey Maguire as the web-slinging superhero. Although Raimi last directed Maguire as Spidey in 2007’s Spider-Man 3, Maguire recently reprised the role for 2021’s blockbuster hit Spider-Man: No Way Home.

In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Raimi addressed rumors that a fourth Spidey movie was in the works with him back at the helm and Maguire returning. “Well, I haven’t heard about that yet,” said Raimi. “I did read that, but I’m not actually working on it yet. I mean, Marvel and Columbia are so successful with current Spider-Man [movies], and the track there, and I don’t know that they’re going to go back to me, and say, ‘Well, folks, we can also tell that story!’”

Raimi continued, “I loved Spider-Man: No Way Home. It was really, super powerful seeing Tobey [Maguire] again in it. I haven’t talked to Tobey about [a fourth movie], but maybe Marvel has or Columbia Pictures. I just worked with Marvel on a movie called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Ngakho, I’m on great terms with them. I’m sure I would hear about it if it was in the works.”

Although Sam Raimi Sounds Game for ‘Spider-Man 4,’ He’d Still Like To Work With Tobey Maguire Again on Something Else

Although Sony is planning a fourth Spidey movie with Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire proved in Spider-Man: No Way Home that people still enjoyed seeing him in the role as much as Sam Raimi did. In a 2022 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Raimi said about seeing No Way Home:

“It was very emotionally moving. I probably felt like the audience felt: ‘Oh, there’s my old friend, the old hero, who I haven’t seen in 15 years. He’s back.’ And the way Tobey did that performance, it looked like he had lived kind of a hard life as Spider-Man. So it was really emotional and so well done, but it was also like spending an afternoon with old friends who I hadn’t seen in 15 years. It was beautiful.”

So even though Raimi sounds in the dark about Spider-Man 4, he’d still like to work with Maguire again. “I love Tobey,” said Raimi. “I love Kirsten Dunst. I think all things are possible. I don’t really have a story or a plan. I don’t know if Marvel would be interested in that right now. I don’t know what their thoughts are about that. I haven’t really pursued that. But it sounds beautiful. Even if it wasn’t a Spider-Man movie, I’d love to work with Tobey again, in a different role.”
