Mel Gibson is single again.
The actor and director, 69, has split from his longtime partner Rosalind Ross, 35, after nine years together. The breakup actually happened about a year ago, but the couple kept it private until now. They confirmed the news on Tuesday in a joint statement to PEOPLE.
“Although it’s sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible,” the statement read.
Gibson and Ross share an 8-year-old son, Lars. The two were introduced by mutual friends in 2014 and got together not long after — when he was 58 and she was 24.
The 34-year age gap raised eyebrows at the time, but Gibson brushed off the criticism. “Regarding age and relationships, it’s just a number,” he told The Mirror in 2016. “She is an adult, and we dig each other.”
Ross went on to write the screenplay for Father Stu, a 2022 film Gibson starred in and produced.
The split comes after a difficult year. In January, the couple lost their Malibu home in the Los Angeles wildfires. Gibson was out of town at the time — recording an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience in Austin when he learned the news. Ross and their son were safely evacuated along with their animals.
“I’ve been relieved from the burden of my stuff, because it’s all in cinders,” Gibson said on NewsNation at the time.
Gibson’s relationship history has drawn public scrutiny before. He was married to Robyn Moore for 26 years before their divorce in 2011. They share seven children. He then had a highly publicized relationship with singer Oksana Grigorieva, with whom he shares a 16-year-old daughter, Lucia.
Gibson was named one of Trump’s “special ambassadors” to Hollywood back in January, alongside Sylvester Stallone and Jon Voight. The role was never clearly defined, but the title stuck. Now, at 69, the ambassador is back on the market.
He isn’t slowing down professionally. Gibson is currently in Rome filming The Resurrection of the Christ, a reported $250 million two-part sequel to his 2004 film The Passion of the Christ. The first installment is set for release in March 2027.
Nine kids. Three women. One $250 million Jesus movie. And now, newly single.
