Secret Invasion set images reveal a better look at Nick Fury’s new beard and scar. Samuel L. Jackson returns to the MCU through the upcoming Marvel Studios/Disney+ series. The project doesn’t currently have a release date, but principal photography is already in full swing in the U.K. Filming appears to be focused on exterior shots, hence the barrage of snaps from the production.

Spider-Man: Far From Home’s post-credits scene marks the last time Fury was spotted in the MCU. At that point, he’s revealed to be in some sort of space station, working with the Skrulls for an unknown project. In Secret Invasion, he’s teaming up again with Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos the Srull, who debuted in the 2019 movie, Captain Marvel. Olivia Colman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Killian Scott, and Emilia Clarke, meanwhile, are all boarding the franchise through the show, although there’s no word yet on who they are playing. Finally, Fury will be rejoined by his long-time ally, Maria Hill, with Colbie Smulders also confirmed to appear in the project.

Plot details are still scant at the moment for Secret Invasion, but the majority of the cast has already been spotted filming over the last few days. In the latest batch of images from the set of the show, courtesy of Just Jared, fans can get a better look at Fury’s look for the series as he sports a bushier beard. He’s also not wearing his signature eye patch. Check the photos below:

Given the lack of context to these images, it’s difficult to predict what’s exactly happening in them. But, aside from Colman, Secret Invasion’s principal cast seem to be all gathered for this mysterious sequence. For Fury, considering that Mendelsohn has also been spotted filming, it’s safe to say that these photos are actually the real character and not a Skrull impersonating him like what happened in Spider-Man: Far From Home. It’s also uncertain where Secret Invasion fits in the MCU’s timeline. It takes place after the Infinity Saga, but it’s unclear how it relates to the events of other Phase 4 projects. Based solely on Jackson’s appearance on the show, however, it’s possible that there has been a considerable amount of time that passed between his last sighting in the MCU and Secret Invasion.

While originally expected to arrive on Disney+ in late 2022, now, that may no longer be the case. Despite the show’s production now in full swing, it’s possible that Marvel Studios opted to push it back to early 2023 for a couple of possible reasons. Firstly, they may want to give the project enough time to finish shooting and then do post-production. That way, its VFX work is polished and not rushed. Secondly, given the MCU’s full slate in 2022, there’s really no need to squeeze it in this year as well. In any case, there won’t be any scarcity of Marvel content for this year, so delaying Secret Invasion shouldn’t be much of a problem.
