Margot Robbie, Olivia Wilde, and X-Men producer Simon Kinberg have teamed up to adapt the comic Avengelyne for the big screen. Deadpool cocreator Rob Liefeld also cocreated the avenging-angel superhero Avengelyne.
According to Variety, “The project doesn’t have a home yet, so the creative team will try to sell the film to studios and streamers in the coming weeks. It’s unclear who will play Avengelyne, an angel who fights the forces of evil and often finds herself face-to-face with demons and monsters.”
In 2016, Deadline described the angel superhero as “the most feared warrior in Heaven’s Warhost, having single-handedly broken into Pandemonium, the outer fortress of Hell, to confront the Devil himself. She is a fallen angel, banished from Heaven by God after being tricked into questioning his love for humans. Avengelyne was stripped of all her angelic abilities, other than her great strength and her blood, which, once extracted from her body, could be used as a weapon or a miracle once empowered by quoting verses from the Bible. Avengelyne uses her powers to fight demons on Earth and is being groomed to be humankind’s last hope in a coming Armageddon.”
Previous Attempts To Make an ‘Avengelyne’ Have Failed

At least two previous attempts to bring Avengelyne to the big screen have failed. In 2013, former The Mandalorian star Gina Carano (pictured) was attached to play the character (Disney fired Carano from her The Mandalorian gig after she posted racist remarks on social media). Then, in 2016, Paramount acquired the rights for a version directed by Akiva Goldsman. Neither of those came together, which leaves the current incarnation by Robbie, Wilde, and Kinberg without a studio attached, but they are reportedly shopping it around now.
Rob Liefeld described Avengelyne’s appeal as follows:
“Avengelyne resonated so powerfully with the audience because her story of redemption is one that is so relatable. A fallen angel, sentenced to redeem herself by serving humanity, Earth is a foreign environment to her, she must adapt in order to save herself as well as mankind. Her dilemma provides humor amidst the larger plot engine driving her journey. ”
Wilde, who previously directed Booksmart and Don’t Worry Darling, will direct Avengelyne. Robbie’s company LuckyChap along with partners Tom Ackerley and Josie McNamara will produce the movie, along with Kinberg.
LuckyChap produced Barbie, Promising Young Woman, Saltburn, and I, Tonya. LuckyChap is also producing the Universal Pictures Christmas comedy Naughty starring Wilde.
