ABC has renewed 9-1-1 for an eighth season. The news comes just before the 100th episode of 9-1-1 airs on Thursday. The series stars Angela Bassett as Athena Grant, Peter Krause as Bobby Nash, Jennifer Love Hewitt as Maddie Buckley, Oliver Stark as Evan “Buck” Buckley, Kenneth Choi as Howie “Chimney” Han, Aisha Hinds as Henrietta “Hen” Wilson, Ryan Guzman as Eddie Diaz, and Gavin McHugh as Christopher Diaz.

The official description of 9-1-1 reads: “Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear reimagine the procedural drama with 9-1-1. The series explores the high-pressure experiences of first responders — including police officers, firefighters and dispatchers — who are thrust into the most frightening, shocking, and heart-stopping situations. These emergency responders must try to balance saving those who are at their most vulnerable with solving the problems in their own lives. The show draws from real-life, high-pressure experiences of first responders who regularly face heart-stopping situations that are often unpredictable, intense, and uplifting at the same time.”

After a six-season run, Fox canceled 9-1-1 in May 2023. ABC revived the series for a seventh season, which premiered on March 14, 2024. According to Variety, the season seven premiere pulled in 11.8 million viewers during its first week of availability, which makes 9-1-1 the most-watched ABC show this season.

Two-time Oscar nominee Angela Bassett spoke to People about 9-1-1, which she also executive produces. “I’ve always been a hard worker,” said Bassett. “You have to know what to say no to as well as what to say yes to. And during this time, a lot of things have been worthy of me saying yes to.”

Bassett — who is married to Courtney B. Vance and has two 18-year-old twin daughters readying for college in the fall — says she often leaves home before sunrise and returns after sunset to film 9-1-1. “I hope that what will come out of that is that they see a mama, a woman, a Black woman achieving her dreams, having success,” said Bassett. “They’ll see that hard work pays off. And they’ll be about that life for themselves.”

Bassett, who took home an honorary Oscar earlier this year in celebration of her long career, added, “One of the things that always that I say to myself and to my kids is, ‘Find the good and praise it.The fact that it’s happening all at the same time, it can be a little overwhelming unless you just breathe through it and remember to be grateful. For all of it. For what you prayed for, what you worked for, for what you dreamed of.”

9-1-1 airs Thursdays on ABC and the next day on Hulu. Watch the season seven trailer below.
