ABC has renewed Grey’s Anatomy for a historic 21st season, extending the show’s run as the longest-running medical drama ever. The 20th season of Grey’s Anatomy stars Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Kevin McKidd, Caterina Scorsone, Camilla Luddington, Kim Raver, Jake Borelli, Chris Carmack, Debbie Allen, Natalie Morales, Jessica Capshaw, and Scott Speedman.

The official description of Grey’s Anatomy reads: “Recipient of the 2007 Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Television Series and nominated for multiple Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series, Grey’s Anatomy is considered one of the great television shows of our time. The high-intensity medical drama follows a team of doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial who are faced with life-or-death decisions on a daily basis. They seek comfort from one another, and, at times, more than just friendship. Together they discover that neither medicine nor relationships can be defined in black and white.

According to Deadline, season 21 will consist of 18 episodes, up from the strike-delayed 20th season’s 10 episodes. Although Ellen Pompeo’s Dr. Meredith Grey is no longer a full-time cast member, Pompeo still serves as executive producer and contributes the voiceover that opens and closes each episode.

Meg Marinis took over as Grey’s Anatomy showrunner in season 20 after Krista Vernoff’s departure from the Shonda Rhimes-created medical drama. “The loyalty and love of Grey’s Anatomy fans has propelled us into a historic 21st season, and I could not be more grateful,” said Rhimes. “Meg Marinis’ storytelling is a gift that continues to keep the show vibrant, compelling and alive, and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for next season.”

Back in February, President of Disney Television Group Craig Erwich said, “I think the show is as creatively strong as it’s ever been. Not just the live [episodes] you are watching today, but it’s fueling growth for our streaming platform.”

When Deadline asked Marinis last month if the 20th season would represent Grey’s Anatomy’s final one, Marinis said, “We still have stories to tell. We receive a tremendous amount of support from the studio and the network and from Shondaland. So I’m going to keep going until they tell me to put that pen down.”

New episodes of the 20th season of Grey’s Anatomy air each Thursday on ABC and the next day on Hulu. Watch the 20th-season Grey’s Anatomy trailer below.
