Benefit for Jordan Renne Cilley and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International
"Thank you for coming to When You Believe. My name is Jordan Renne Cilley. I am ten years old and I have Juvenile Diabetes Type l. I was diagnosed on March 17, 2007, when I was only seven years old.
…You get diabetes when your pancreas stops making natural insulin in your body. The insulin injections help bring down my blood sugar. I have to poke my finger to check my blood sugar before every meal and snack… Then I have to give myself insulin injections… [adding up to] 6-8 injections a day… I also have to be careful that my blood sugar doesn’t go too low, because I could end up in the hospital.
Sometimes I get upset and cry that I have to stop what I’m doing to check my blood, and take insulin injections. It’ not fair that I have to let my team down and stop playing a volleyball game because I feel low and have to bring my blood sugars up. It makes me sad that I have juvenile diabetes.
With your help I want to raise money to find a cure for juvenile diabetes, to educate people about juvenile diabetes so that people are aware of who and why we have juvenile diabetes. Finding a cure for juvenile diabetes means not having to always poke our fingers to check our blood. It means that we will be able to live life without being afraid of our blood sugar getting too high or too low. It means that someday we would not have to take insulin injetions anymore."

Stay at Home Gypsy here–I’ve had "juvenile diabetes" for twenty-two years–I got it as an adult. I know how relentlessly yucky it is. I’m praying for stem-cell research for this. Until then, I’m honored to have photographed this amazing performance, and to support this girl and this quest.
