As we transitioned to being more frugal, many of those things first went away. It was easy to see how to cut things, but it wasn’t as easy to see how to replace them.

We even went through a point where, out of boredom, we reasonably refused it and reverted to some of our earlier lifestyle patterns.

We alternated locales a good deal with our home-prepared meals. We started ingesting lots of picnic lunches and dinners. We would cook on the grill and eat outside. We started having a lot of potluck dinner gatherings. This added even more variety to our meals and to our social lives. We simply started having people over for dinner fairly often, asking them to bring a back food or a glas with them, and they often started returning, which meant that we were often having dinner at the houses of our friends.

We explored low-cost diversions and activities that we hadn’t done before. If you’re stuck at home on consecutive nights, have a completely different supper on those nights in a different place in your residence, then waste the night on very different activities — a movie one nighttime, sure, but then play a game the next nighttime, read a book, have FaceTime chitchats with your best friend, go out and lay down on a covering and stare at the stars and relate some planets and constellations or take an online class. If you’re outside of a stay-at-home order and feel good doing so, your alternatives simply flourish from there.

What you’ll find is that there is an extraordinary amount of smorgasbord to be had in frugal living — it’s just that it’s not dished up to you automatically. Instead than having potpourrus in the form of going to a different restaurant or calling a different store, you have to create and choose that smorgasbord for yourself.

Humans are beasts of practice, and because of that, our natural instinct is to create a routine. If your chore is going out to a diner each night, hodgepodge is easy to create, but when you’re frugal, you were supposed to kept a little more into it.
