Austin Butler Will Play Lead in Darren Aronofsky’s Crime Thriller ‘Caught Stealing’

Austin Butler will play the lead in Sony’s Caught Stealing directed by Darren Aronofsky. Charlie Huston, the author of the book Caught Stealing, will write the script.

According to Variety, “The film follows Hank Thompson, a burned-out former baseball player, as he’s unwittingly plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of ‘90s New York City.”

Aronofsky, the Oscar-nominated director of Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, and The Whale, said, “I am excited to be teaming up with my old friends at Sony Pictures to bring Charlie’s adrenaline-soaked roller coaster ride to life. I can’t wait to start working with Austin Butler and my family of NYC filmmakers.”

“Darren is one of the most brilliant audiovisual storytellers in the world, and adapting these wonderful books by Charlie Huston for Austin Butler to star was too exciting an opportunity to not be a part of,” said Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group President Sanford Panitch.

Austin Butler Is Enjoying a Hot Streak at the Box Office

Austin Butler is only 32 years old but his star has risen swiftly in recent years. Butler got his start on Nickelodeon shows such as Zoey 101 before moving to the big screen. He played Tex Watson in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which opened more doors. In 2022, Austin Butler played Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s flashy Elvis, which won Butler a Golden Globe and BAFTA Award, as well as earning him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Austin Butler plays the bald and bitter Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in Dune: Part Two (pictured), Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic that is currently cleaning up at the box office. He also stars on Apple TV’s Masters of the Air.

In the official production notes notes for Dune: Part Two, Austin Butler said:

“As soon as I read the script and spoke to Denis, I knew that it was going to be so much fun. Denis is an incredible writer, he understands story and humanity and is able to layer it really well. He also writes in a very visual way, so I knew it was going to be a great film. You don’t get to play characters like this every day, and on top of that was the challenge of the physical transformation. It was also about getting into his psychology, discussing with Denis why he behaves like he does, his relationship with his family and the brutal world of the uncle, which he grew up within. Characters like Feyd can be hard to justify, yet humanity is full of those types of people, so shining a light on that part of the human condition was a fascinating thing to explore.”

Given how well Austin Butler played the villainous Feyd in Dune: Part Two, his portrayal of a burned-out baseball player who gets caught up in the criminal underworld in Caught Stealing should prove fascinating.
