As much as I enjoy watching TV shows, sometimes, especially at the weekend, I just fancy a good movie. While Netflix is often people’s go-to when it comes to streaming, it’s not free.
If you’re looking to watch movies without having to either purchase one or pay for a streaming service like Netflix or Hulu then you might want to know if there are any free movie apps out there.
Luckily, there are. Below, I’ll cover some of the best free movie apps and give you other ways to watch movies for free.
These apps are legal too, meaning you don’t have to worry about breaking any laws next time you want to enjoy a good film!
The best part about these apps is that many allow you to stream films in HD. Because these apps are free most of them do have ads. This is how most of these apps are able to offer films at no cost.

First on the list we have Plex. It’s a website and app where you can stream more than 20,000 free on-demand movies and shows from places like Warner Brothers, Lionsgate, and MGM. With Plex, you can also watch live TV. There are more than 80 channels available on the app. Overall, it’s a good app with a lot to offer movie fans and TV fans alike.

Next up we have Crackle. This is one of the most popular free streaming apps out there. Crackle is owned by Sony so it’s completely legit. On there, you can stream Hollywood films for free from tons of different genres like horror, comedy, and action.
Because it’s free, Crackle does have ads on its content. This isn’t too big of a deal though. You don’t need a subscription to watch Crackle so you can just visit the website or open up the app and watch movies for free! You can set up a free account to see fewer ads and so that you can pick up where you left off on whatever device you want.

Since it’s owned by the Fox Corporation, Tubi is a legit and legal website where you can stream films. Through the Tubi website or app, you can stream more than 20,000 movies and TV shows.
You don’t need a credit card or subscription or anything like that to enjoy watching films with Tubi. You can stream video content from studios like Paramount, MGM, and Lionsgate.

Pluto TV is a website and app where you can stream 1,000s of movies and TV shows. There are more than 250 channels available too. What I like about Pluto TV is that it has lots of films that you’ve actually heard of on there like Zodiac and Legally Blonde.
Also, aside from films and TV shows, you can find news and live sports on Pluto TV. There are some ads, like with most of the apps on the list, because this is how these apps are able to provide their content for free.

Next on the list we have Popcornflix. It’s a great app for streaming movies for free. There are more than 700 films available to stream on there. You don’t need a subscription, which is great! On Popcornflix, you’ll find films from multiple genres, such as comedy, action/thrillers, romance, kids/family, and horror. New films are added daily too and there are even documentaries on offer. Aside from films, there are also viral videos and TV shows available as well.

Now, Vudu does have films that you have to buy or rent. Give Xumo a try if you’re looking to stream Hollywood movies for free! With the app, you get access to a streaming library that offers thousands of films! That’s not all. Peacock TV is a streaming app from NBC. There’s a free version of the service and a paid one. I love NBC shows like Superstore, Grimm, and Will & Grace. The free version of Peacock TV offers more than just TV shows though and you can actually stream movies with the app for free!
You get instant access to hundreds of free films from major Hollywood studios such as Universal, DreamWorks Animation, and Focus Features. There are also documentaries available on there. With Peacock TV, you can also get news and sports coverage.

YouTube is another platform where you can get films for free. Now, it’s not quite as simple as watching for free on the sites above.
First of all, YouTube isn’t just a site for movies, as you know, with long and short videos on everything from gaming to makeup available on there. However, you can actually find full-length films on YouTube. I’ve watched a few thriller films on there for free. Sadly, not all movies on YouTube are available for free. You actually have to buy or rent so many of the films available on the platform.
That being said, there is a section for free films on YouTube, which I’ve linked to in the heading for the site. Just visit the storefront linked above and then scroll down to the “Free” section. Click on “View All,” to see more films that you can stream at no cost.
Also, you can do a search for free movies on YouTube as well, either on the app or on the website. It’s a good place to watch films as there are quite a few titles available on there.

The Roku Channel offers free movies that you can stream. You can also get TV shows on there too, as well as news and sports. You can watch films on-demand and there are more than 100 live movie and TV channels available on there too.
With thousands of films available, there’s plenty to watch on the Roku Channel app. There are ads on the app, as with many of the other apps on this list.

Next on the list we have Yidio. Now, this one works in a slightly different way to the other apps on this list. With it, you can watch films from more than 100 services like Netflix, Hulu, Showtime, and Amazon Prime – all in one place. Basically, you can use the app to find free films from multiple platforms.
Not all films on Yidio are free. While many films and TV shows from places like CBS, Crackle, the CW, and PBS, are available for free, some content providers like Netflix and HBO GO, require a subscription or payment to buy or rent, like Google Play and Vudu. So do keep this in mind when you are using Yidio. Yudio itself is free to use, and you can use it to find where to watch your favorite films across all of your favorite services.

Sling TV has a free version of its streaming service which offers lots of films.
You can watch more than 5,000 movies and TV shows. There’s no credit card or registration required. You can just click ON “Watch Free Now” on the Sling website or you can access Sling free on one of the service’s supported devices. You can browse the free selection of films and shows and select the movie you want to watch. Sling does have paid plans too.
Now, according to Sling, you can watch free on the website, as I mentioned earlier. Or on supported devices. You can watch Sling for free on Android devices by opening up the app and clicking on “Explore Free Content.” Currently, the free version isn’t supported on iOS devices, but you could simply visit the site instead!

While you may associate REDBOX with movie rentals, it actually offers films for streaming. Yes, with the app, you can stream some movies for free! You can stream films on demand. There are hundreds to choose from and you can even get documentaries on there. No sign in is required either, which is great. There are ads on these free films though.
Movies are available across multiple genres like action, comedy, sci-fi, and thriller.
Aside from films, REDBOX also offers free live TV for popular channels featuring sports, news, music, and more.

15. Old Movies
Are you a fan of old movies? I love classic films starring people like Gregory Peck, and if you love the classics, then you’ll definitely want to give the Old Movies app a try. With the app, you can watch full films from the classical Hollywood cinema era. It includes films from the 1910s to the 1960s.
Sadly, it’s only available for Android devices. So, if you have an iPhone, you won’t be able to watch. You can, however, enjoy the other apps on the list instead!

I actually think that Prime Video has more movies that I’ve heard of than Netflix does! It’s great for films from all genres and I’ve watched many great horror movies on Prime video.

17. Take advantage of free trials
Want to watch some free movies this weekend? Then why not take advantage of a free trial. Lots of streaming services that you normally have to pay for offer a trial period where you can watch films and TV shows at no cost.
