Federal\u00a0prosecutors and\u00a0defense lawyers\u00a0for ousted Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/a> and his wife Cilia Flores are seeking a June 2027 trial date in their narco-terrorism and drug trafficking case, according to a court filing Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n Ahead of a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday, prosecutors and defense lawyers laid out a proposed schedule for pre-trial motions,\u00a0the turnover of classified evidence and the trial date.\u00a0<\/p>\n U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein could lock in a schedule as early as Wednesday during the previously scheduled court conference.\u00a0<\/p>\n Former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, far right, listens as his defense attorney, Barry Pollack, center, addresses Judge Alvin Hellerstien (not pictured), as Maduro’s wife Cilia Flores, far left, looks on. Maduro\u2019s other pretrial motions would be due in January.\u00a0<\/p>\n According to the filing, prosecutors have already turned over the bulk of the non-classified evidence in the case, and would turn over most of the classified materials by November.\u00a0<\/p>\n Both sides reserved the right to request to delay the trial, and prosecutors noted that the schedule might shift if they have issues with some of the classified evidence.\u00a0<\/p>\n Maduro and Flores last appeared in court in March<\/a>, where his lawyers unsuccessfully pushed to have the case thrown out because the Treasury Department had blocked the Venezuelan government from paying Maduro’s defense lawyers.\u00a0<\/p>\n Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are seen in handcuffs after landing at a Manhattan helipad, escorted by heavily armed Federal agents as they make their way into an armored car en route to a Federal courthouse in Manhattan on January 5, 2026 in New York City.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Xny\/star Max\/GC Images<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Defense lawyers have since withdrawn their motion to dismiss the case after the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control in April began allowing Maduro and Flores to receive money from Venezuela to pay for their attorneys.\u00a0<\/p>\n In January, the United States carried out a military operation in Venezuela to capture and bring Maduro and his wife to the United States to face charges including narco-terrorism and drug trafficking.
