On SmartCustomer, a Nebraska reviewer wrote in January 2025 of no samples in four years, and a New York reviewer in August 2023 of none in two. Canada is still active: Trustpilot reviewers thanked it for boxes from July to September 2026.

If you still want to be ready for a US drop, its own pages point to four steps:

Answer every profile question. The FAQ says who gets more samples depends on “the profile questions you answer as well as who our brands would like to offer their samples to.”

Watch your email. Members with a match get an email when samples go live.

Follow its Instagram. The “Never miss an alert!” line in its footer links only to its Instagram account.

Order the same day. The 2022 US drop sold out the day it opened.

Bottom line: A US drop is first come, first served, and none has shown on the public US site since early 2023. Its spring 2023 list, seen with the US site selected, shows three products: Simply Organic taco seasoning, Friskies Lil Shakes for cats and a BIC mechanical pencil.

An older, undated US list holds six: Kellogg’s Jumbo Snax in Apple Jacks and Froot Loops, a Bumble Bee tuna salad kit, two Bona cleaners and Purina Prime Bones dog treats. In 2016, the beauty blog Beautygeeks wrote that a US round offered up to 14 samples, including Garnier Fructis and Avalon Organics.

Votes as shown on SampleSource’s US spring 2023 list and its older undated list (choose USA – English first), read October 14, 2026. A ninth item, a second Bona cleaner, shows 0 votes.

Each product shows how many members voted on it. Eight range from 5,186 for the taco mix to 18,055 for the Apple Jacks snack, with Froot Loops at 17,804, the tuna kit at 8,923, the dog treats at 8,338, the lemon Bona cleaner at 7,626, the pencil at 7,093 and Friskies at 6,277. Only the unscented Bona cleaner shows 0 votes, so most listed samples drew thousands.

Box sizes vary. A Canadian SmartCustomer reviewer wrote in March 2025 of 6 samples in a spring box, while “most others got up to 12.”

The FAQ never mentions coupons. Members do: 3 of the newest 50 Trustpilot reviews are mostly about the coupons, and a 2023 SmartCustomer reviewer got a case of Lipton iced tea free with one.

Bottom line: Expect trial sizes of supermarket brands, food and pet items as often as beauty. A box is a few free things and maybe a coupon, not a haul.

Why the samples are free: brands pay for your profile

Brands pay SampleSource to put samples in front of chosen households. Its corporate site says it serves “hundreds of brands across North America” and “hundreds of thousands of members.” Brands target by “hundreds of filters,” such as income, gluten-free households, pet owners and people who buy a competitor.

After you try a sample, it runs a “follow-up purchase tracking study to measure ROI.” It also collects ratings, with feeds to the review platforms Bazaarvoice and PowerReviews, and its terms let reviews appear on “third party review networks used by our brand partners.” In 2012 its director told Strategy that this kind of sampling gave “conversion rates anywhere between 30% and 60%,” citing research with Nielsen and its own.

That makes your profile the price of the box. Here is what the privacy notice says:

What you give: name, address and the optional profile, plus your IP address, pages viewed and cookies, Google Analytics and web beacons.

Partners get it only if you opt in: “we will not disclose, trade, rent, sell or otherwise transfer your personal information, without your consent.” Opt in to partner offers and your name, address and demographics can go to them.

Reviews go public: a posted rating can show your first name, last initial, city, state and gender, and your public IP address goes to the brand “for review fraud detection.”

California categories: the notice lists “inferences” among what it collects, a profile of your “preferences, characteristics, psychological trends.” It lists no categories sold.

Opting out takes your password: the Do Not Sell form asks for your email and password, and bundles the sale opt-out with partner emails.

Few members complain about spam. None of the newest 50 Trustpilot reviews does, and two praise how little it emails. One Maryland SmartCustomer reviewer in January 2025 reported “a ton of calls and emails” and no samples.

Bottom line: The samples are paid for by brands that want to know your household and whether you buy. Skip the partner opt-in, and the trade is modest.

SampleSource myths vs what it publishes

Six things often assumed about SampleSource, each beside what its own pages say.

What happened when people tried SampleSource

No reporter’s hands-on test of SampleSource turned up. The record is the company’s own posts, a beauty blog and two review sites, counted on October 14, 2026.

The newest 50 Trustpilot reviews, July 13 to September 7, 2026, are 46 five-star and 4 four-star. The complaints are about scarcity: one reviewer is never quick enough “and all the samples are gone,” and another “used to get a lot more offers.”

Counted from the reviewers’ locations on Trustpilot (newest 50 English reviews, July 13 to September 7, 2026) and SmartCustomer (newest 20, March 2023 to March 2025), October 14, 2026.

The location tells the US story. We counted the newest 50 Trustpilot and newest 20 SmartCustomer reviews by theme and country, and checked BBB, CourtListener and the domain record. What arrives in a member’s box is credited to the members and the blog that described it.

SampleSource FAQ

Is SampleSource a scam?

No. It is a Canadian sampling company that has run since 2011, with 0 BBB complaints and no court cases on CourtListener. Its weakness in the US is how rarely it drops, not fraud.

Is SampleSource free?

Yes. Its FAQ says joining and samples cost “Nothing at all!”, shipping included. You pay with the profile you fill in.

How often does SampleSource send samples?

Its FAQ says spring, summer and fall, never winter. In the US, every archived homepage since February 2023 says “New samples soon!”, and its last dated US drop was April 2022.

How long does SampleSource take to ship?

Four to six weeks from your order, by its FAQ, including 5–10 business days in the mail. Lost boxes are not replaced.

Does SampleSource sell your information?

Its privacy notice says it shares nothing without your consent, and partners get your details only if you opt in. It still offers a Do Not Sell form, which needs your email and password.

What do SampleSource members say on Reddit and review sites?

Reddit threads could not be read for this review. On Trustpilot, 48 of the 50 newest reviewers are Canadian and almost all happy, while US reviewers on SmartCustomer mostly report years without samples.

Source link

This SampleSource review draws on its FAQ, terms, privacy notice and sales pitch to brands, its own posts and 70 counted member reviews.
