Neither he nor his mother named Manganiello, although its appearance amid coverage of <em>Bloodlines<\/em> prompted speculation that it referred to the actor.<\/p>\n<p>During an Oct. 12 appearance on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/joe-manganiello-opens-up-about-his-private-battle-with-a-mystery-illness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBS Mornings<\/a>, Gayle King asked Manganiello about that interpretation. The interview came one day before the book\u2019s release, as he publicly discussed a health crisis he had kept largely private for years.<\/p>\n<p>Manganiello and Vergara married in 2015, announced their separation in July 2023 and divorced in 2024. His account of their relationship now includes both accusations of emotional distance and acknowledgment of a decision he says saved his life.<\/p>\n<h2>Manganiello Tells Critics to \u2018Read the Book First\u2019<\/h2>\n<p><noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Joe Manganiello gets emotional describing 7-year health ordeal\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-HpABCYKE7I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>King put the apparent suggestion to him directly, asking how he would answer the idea that someone could acknowledge his suffering while still describing him as narcissistic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I think anybody who said that should read the book first,\u201d Manganiello replied, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/joe-manganiello-responds-narcissism-sofia-vergara-12166843\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">People<\/a>. He described the memoir as a story about suffering, survival and hope.<\/p>\n<p>Manolo\u2019s Instagram Story included a chart comparing \u201cgood men\u201d with \u201cnarcissistic men.\u201d His accompanying message warned that a narcissist could resent someone\u2019s help, remain dissatisfied and ultimately portray the person helping him as the villain.<\/p>\n<p>Vergara shared the Story with an applause emoji. He writes that his symptoms began shortly after the wedding.<\/p>\n<p>His condition led to emergency intestinal surgery in 2016. During the CBS interview, he said doctors contacted Vergara while he was unconscious and presented her with options. He credited her with choosing the procedure that kept him alive.<\/p>\n<p>The operation gave him more time, he explained, but doctors still could not resolve the underlying problem. He also acknowledged that years of illness affected Vergara and other people close to him.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in the memoir, Manganiello alleges that his marriage became emotionally distant. As <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/joe-manganiello-ex-marriage-to-sofia-vergara-not-point-of-his-new-book-exclusive-12160038\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">People<\/a> reported, he claims Vergara refused to hug him and ridiculed his attachment to his Chihuahua, Bubbles, whom he adopted during a particularly difficult period.<\/p>\n<p>Those allegations reflect Manganiello\u2019s account. In its Oct. 8 report, People said Vergara\u2019s representatives had not responded to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<h2>Their Disagreement About Having Children Predates the Memoir<\/h2>\n<p>Vergara offered a different explanation for the breakup in a January 2024 interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/people\/2024-01-15\/sofia-vergara-my-boobs-opened-a-lot-of-doors-for-me-but-im-still-here-because-im-not-afraid-of-taking-a-risk-and-i-work-harder-than-anyone.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El Pa\u00eds<\/a>. She said Manganiello wanted children while she felt finished with that stage of motherhood, having raised Manolo after becoming a mother at 19.<\/p>\n<p>Manganiello challenged that explanation months later. Speaking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mensjournal.com\/entertainment\/joe-manganiello\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Men\u2019s Journal<\/a> in July 2024, he said they had tried to start a family early in their marriage and that he had promised not to leave if those efforts failed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s because two people grew apart, and sometimes that happens,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>His memoir adds an account of how his health changed those plans. Manganiello says unsuccessful IVF attempts led them to consider egg donors, but he eventually abandoned the idea of fatherhood because he feared dying and leaving Vergara to raise a child alone.<\/p>\n<h2>Manganiello Says Fatherhood Is a Possibility Again<\/h2>\n<p>Manganiello now says he is symptom-free and no longer taking medication.
