Decker<\/em> is \u201cnot over yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bridges made his debut as Reggie Decker, the father of Speedman\u2019s private investigator, in the ABC drama\u2019s Oct. 6 episode, \u201cThe Angler,\u201d the fourth installment of season 2.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/scott-speedman-steamy-love-triangle-playing-beau-bridges-son-what-next-r-j-decker-12160427\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Entertainment Weekly<\/a>, Speedman called Bridges \u201ca very easy fit\u201d and credited the writers with giving the actors a relationship they could develop through arguments and moments of understanding.<\/p>\n<p>The second season has also introduced Shantel VanSanten as Gertrude \u201cTrudy\u201d Harris, a crime-lab technician.<\/p>\n<h2>Reggie\u2019s Latest Scheme Makes Him a Suspect<\/h2>\n<p><noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"R.J. knows Reggie all too well. Reggie\u2019s involvement in the fishing tournament is suspicious enough to put him on his son\u2019s suspect list.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know I wasn\u2019t the greatest father,\u201d Reggie tells him. R.J. responds, \u201cYou weren\u2019t any kind of father; you left!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reggie helps with the investigation, and the episode ends with father and son fishing together.<\/p>\n<p>Bridges told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvline.com\/2279521\/rj-decker-season-2-episode-4-explained-beau-bridges-trudy-returns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TVLine<\/a> that he once enjoyed fishing with his own children but stopped after becoming vegan about 30 years ago. He also objected to hooking fish for catch-and-release, so performing the scene meant returning to an activity he had long since given up.<\/p>\n<h2>Bridges Draws on Raising Five Children<\/h2>\n<p>Bridges told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/1294842\/r-j-decker-beau-bridges-scott-speedman-rj-father\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TV Insider<\/a> that Reggie believes becoming successful will allow him to give his son something worthwhile. His pursuit of that success repeatedly took him away from the family he wanted to provide for. Bridges also said Reggie supported R.J. during his imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>The actor, who has five children, called being a good father \u201cprobably one of the hardest things I\u2019ve ever tried to do.\u201d He said memories of his own failures still encourage him to try to improve.<\/p>\n<p>Bridges said Reggie becomes fascinated by R.J.\u2019s detective work and starts imagining himself in the same profession, even as his attempts to help leave his son unimpressed.<\/p>\n<h2>Trudy Complicates R.J. and Emi\u2019s Future<\/h2>\n<p><noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"R.J. R.J.\u2019s ex-wife, Catherine, suggests inviting her to his conditional-release party, while Catherine\u2019s wife, detective Mel, notices his flirting.<\/p>\n<p>Speedman praised VanSanten\u2019s quickness and ease as a scene partner, saying their chemistry came naturally. He told EW that he could see the connection developing beyond the current season.<\/p>\n<p>Speedman said he would bet \u201ca pretty good number of dollars\u201d that R.J.\u2019s romance with Emi Ochoa, played by Jaina Lee Ortiz, had not reached its end, although he acknowledged that he did not know for certain.<\/p>\n<p>Emi is currently focused on her family\u2019s problems, and Speedman said he would like the show to keep exploring the triangle in a third season. ABC has not announced a renewal for season 3.<\/p>\n<h2>R.J. and His Father Take Another Case Next Week<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.detpress.com\/abc\/pressrelease\/r-j-decker-better-luck-tomorrow-10-13\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC<\/a> pairs R.J. and his father again in \u201cBetter Luck Tomorrow,\u201d scheduled for Oct. 13.<\/p>\n<p>Their client is a caretaker at a senior-living community who believes he keeps experiencing the same day.
