Other store dates are still subject to each chain’s announcement, so check the individual store section before you shop.

The local giveaway dates are just as important. Some 2026 programs are scheduled between November 16 and 24, but the exact date depends on the organization and location. If you need a free turkey from a food bank, church or charity, contact local programs early rather than waiting for Thanksgiving week.

Pro tip: If a store requires you to earn spending or points on a loyalty card, use the same card on every qualifying trip. ShopRite and Giant Eagle, for example, have counted purchases by loyalty card in past promotions. The same applies to regular Meijer stores, which are different from the Meijer Market locations mentioned above.

That doesn’t mean these stores have nothing to offer.

In 2025, Publix, Food Lion and regular Meijer stores had frozen turkeys for 49 cents a pound or less, while Walmart, Kroger, Aldi and Target offered low-priced Thanksgiving meal bundles.

If you can’t get a turkey free, see the section below on the cheapest places to buy a turkey for Thanksgiving.

Is a Free Store Turkey Really Free?

A free store turkey is only a good deal if you would have spent the required amount at that store anyway.

For example, the American Farm Bureau Federation’s 2025 survey put a 16-pound frozen turkey at $21.50, or about $1.34 a pound.

Spend $400 at ShopRite to earn a free turkey, and the turkey is worth about 5% of what you spent. Spend $150 at BJ’s, and it’s about 14%.

That’s a nice bonus if you’re already doing that shopping. But I wouldn’t spend hundreds of dollars you weren’t planning to spend just to get a $20-something turkey.

There’s another catch: some purchases don’t count toward the spending requirement.

For example:

ShopRite: Prescriptions, gift cards, postage stamps, money orders, money transfers, lottery tickets, bus tickets and Metro passes, milk, cigarettes, tobacco and alcohol

Weis: Postage stamps, money orders, milk, cream, lottery tickets, cigarettes, tobacco, Weis gift cards, alcohol, gasoline, select prescriptions, phone and utility payments and Western Union

Meijer Market: Alcohol, gift and entertainment cards, prepaid debit cards and reload packs, taxes, previous purchases and bottle deposits

I haven’t found a similar exclusion list for BJ’s or Giant Eagle, so check with the store if you’re unsure whether a purchase counts.

One easy detail to miss: Milk doesn’t count toward the spending requirement at either ShopRite or Weis. If you’re adding up your purchases yourself, that can leave you short. When available, use the spending total shown on your receipt or in the store’s app.

Get a Free Turkey With Ibotta Cash Back

Ibotta is a cash-back app, so this offer works differently from a store promotion. You buy the turkey first, then Ibotta pays you back.

Ibotta’s Thanksgiving terms currently show the most recent promotion, which offered 100% cash back on a turkey. Check the page for the 2026 offer when it is posted.

How Ibotta’s free turkey offer works

New users: Download the app and register during the offer period to get 100% cash back on a turkey plus select items. The most recent offer ran November 1 through 23.

Existing users: Refer a friend who registers and redeems an offer to unlock the turkey offer. Existing users could also get a new 100% cash-back offer on a qualifying item each Monday in November.

How you get the money back: Buy the qualifying items, then submit your receipt within 7 days.

Cash-back limit: Up to $22.99, with 1 reward per product per person, household, email or account.

Where: All 50 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.

Which stores: The Thanksgiving terms do not list specific retailers, so check the offer in the Ibotta app before you shop.

The catch with Ibotta’s free turkey offer

You have to spend the money first, and you can’t withdraw your Ibotta earnings immediately.

Ibotta requires at least $20 in earnings, 1 redeemed offer and 7 days to have passed since your first redemption before you can withdraw. You can cash out by bank transfer, PayPal or gift card. Ibotta says withdrawals can take 0 to 5 days to arrive.

That means the turkey can be effectively free, but the turkey cash back alone may not be enough to withdraw your money if you earn less than $20.

Cheapest Places to Buy a Turkey for Thanksgiving 2026

If the giveaways near you are full and the store deals are out of reach, a cheap turkey is the next best thing.

The lowest 2025 price was 25 cents a pound.

Most stores have not posted their 2026 Thanksgiving turkey prices yet, so the table below shows the latest 2025 prices and tells you which stores are worth watching.

As of October 5, 2026, Walmart is the only store I found with a 2026 turkey price listed: 84¢ a pound for Shady Brook Farms and 97¢ for Butterball.

Store

Price/lb.

Fine print

Lidl

25¢

MyLidl app. 14-lb. When it wasn’t, I used reputable local news reports.

For food assistance, turkey safety and SNAP information, I relied on Feeding America, 211, the USDA and other relevant organizations. Scam guidance comes from the FTC.

When a retailer or local program has not announced its 2026 details, I use its most recent available information and clearly identify it as such.

How to Get Your Thanksgiving Turkey for Free

If you need a free turkey for Thanksgiving with no purchase, call 211 today and ask which local giveaways are still taking sign-ups.

If you’re going for a store deal, get the store’s loyalty card now and watch its free-turkey page for the 2026 offer.

Whichever option you choose, check the deadline and put it on your calendar.
