At the end of July, Parton called her longtime friend while McEntire was sitting in a meeting. McEntire missed the call.<\/p>\n<p>She tried to reach Parton afterward, but the two never managed to reconnect. \u201cI\u2019ll never know why she called me,\u201d McEntire said while recounting the moment in a new interview, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/reba-mcentire-reveals-she-missed-call-from-dolly-parton-before-death-12141141\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Entertainment Weekly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>McEntire\u2019s friend Lisa Davis called her on the morning of Aug. 25 and told her Parton had died. Parton was 80. Her official website later announced that the singer died peacefully in Nashville, surrounded by loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>McEntire has not tried to assign a meaning to Parton\u2019s final attempt to reach her. The significance of the later missed call only became apparent to McEntire after she learned of Parton\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<h2>Parton Was There for McEntire During One of Her Hardest Years<\/h2>\n<p>Parton offered McEntire support after the March 1991 plane crash that killed eight members of McEntire\u2019s band and crew following a concert in San Diego.<\/p>\n<p>McEntire has said returning to the stage after the crash was extremely difficult. Vince Gill offered to be there for her, while Parton made an even more practical offer: \u201cHere, take my band.\u201d McEntire recalled the gesture in a <a href=\"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/red-hot-reba-mcentire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Garden &amp; Gun<\/a> interview as one of the acts of support that showed her how many people were willing to help while she was grieving.<\/p>\n<p>McEntire\u2019s memories of Parton stretched back well before that tragedy. When McEntire made her Grand Ole Opry debut in 1977, Parton unexpectedly arrived backstage wearing a black chiffon outfit covered with rhinestone butterflies. McEntire remembered looking at the already established country star and thinking she looked like an angel.<\/p>\n<h2>They Waited Decades Before Recording a Duet<\/h2>\n<p><noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Reba McEntire, Feat. Parton joined McEntire for a new version of \u201cDoes He Love You,\u201d which McEntire had originally recorded with Linda Davis in 1993.<\/p>\n<p>The collaboration appeared on <em>Revived Remixed Revisited<\/em>, with its music video placing the two singers inside the song\u2019s confrontation. The recording finally paired their voices in the studio more than four decades after their first meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Parton had also appeared on McEntire\u2019s sitcom <em>Reba<\/em> in 2005 as real-estate agent Dolly Majors. The guest appearance gave the longtime friends another opportunity to work together before their eventual studio collaboration.<\/p>\n<h2>McEntire Honored Parton at the Emmys Weeks Later<\/h2>\n<p>After Parton\u2019s death, McEntire wrote that there would \u201cnever ever be another\u201d her and thanked her for her music, generosity and \u201chuge huge heart.\u201d She also said she would never forget their final conversation. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2026\/08\/25\/reba-mcentire-mourns-dolly-parton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TMZ<\/a> documented McEntire\u2019s tribute on the day Parton\u2019s death was announced.<\/p>\n<p>On Sept. 14, McEntire carried that remembrance onto the Emmy stage. Following an introduction from Sally Field, she performed Parton\u2019s \u201cAppalachian Memories\u201d during the ceremony\u2019s In Memoriam tribute and ended by telling her late friend that she loved her, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/awards\/story\/2026-09-14\/dolly-parton-emmys-tribute-from-sally-field-reba-mcentire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dollyparton.com\/news\/official-announcement-dolly-parton-passes-away-at-80\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parton family<\/a> described a seven-decade career spanning music, acting, writing and philanthropy in its official announcement.
