He appears during the first episode\u2019s montage showing people opening Wonka bars to discover whether they have been selected for the competition.<\/p>\n<p>The former child actor unwraps his own bar but comes up empty-handed. \u201cNot this time, Wonka,\u201d Ostrum says, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/willy-wonka-and-the-chocolate-factory-star-makes-the-golden-ticket-cameo-12126730\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Entertainment Weekly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ostrum\u2019s appearance is one of several connections between the new series and the 1971 movie. Original Oompa-Loompa Rusty Goffe returns with his son, Ben, while Gene Wilder\u2019s Wonka voice has been recreated with permission from his estate.<\/p>\n<h2>Ostrum\u2019s Cameo Is Hidden in the First Episode<\/h2>\n<p>Netflix keeps Ostrum\u2019s appearance brief rather than introducing him as a celebrity guest. Viewers familiar with the original movie have to recognize him during the opening Golden Ticket sequence.<\/p>\n<p>Showrunner Emer Harkin told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/tudum\/articles\/wonkas-the-golden-ticket-easter-eggs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Netflix Tudum<\/a> that securing Ostrum\u2019s participation meant considerably more to the production because of how rarely he has returned to the Wonka world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was so meaningful for all of us to get that blessing,\u201d Harkin said. \u201cTo get [Peter] being Charlie and blessing our project in a way that he\u2019s never done since the original movie was seismic for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ostrum was a child when he was cast as Charlie, the poor newspaper boy who finds the final Golden Ticket and eventually inherits Wonka\u2019s factory. <em>Willy Wonka &amp; the Chocolate Factory<\/em> became his only feature-film acting role.<\/p>\n<h2>The Original Charlie Bucket Chose Veterinary Medicine Instead of Hollywood<\/h2>\n<p><noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Willy Wonka &amp; the Chocolate Factory | 50th Anniversary | Warner Bros. He returned to school and eventually chose veterinary medicine, earning his veterinary degree from Cornell University in 1984.<\/p>\n<p>Although he left professional acting behind, Ostrum has occasionally participated in reunions and interviews about the movie and remained connected with several of his former castmates.<\/p>\n<p>His new cameo recreates one of Charlie\u2019s most recognizable moments with a different outcome. In the 1971 movie, Charlie discovers the fifth and final Golden Ticket inside a Wonka bar and takes Grandpa Joe with him into the factory. In the Netflix sequence, Ostrum opens the wrapper and finds no invitation waiting for him.<\/p>\n<p>The series includes other celebrity cameos as well. Chef David Chang, <em>Hot Ones<\/em> host Sean Evans and filmmaker and content creator Zach King also appear.<\/p>\n<h2>An Original Oompa-Loompa Returned With His Son<\/h2>\n<p><noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Wonka&#039;s The Golden Ticket | Official Trailer | Netflix\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kGVuOT6h11c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>Rusty Goffe, who played an Oompa-Loompa in the 1971 film, has a larger role in <em>Wonka\u2019s The Golden Ticket<\/em>. He returned to the factory as part of its new Oompa-Loompa workforce alongside his son Ben.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be back here making <em>Wonka\u2019s The Golden Ticket<\/em> with my son Ben is absolutely mind blowing,\u201d Goffe told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/tudum\/articles\/wonkas-the-golden-ticket-easter-eggs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Netflix Tudum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Goffe also advised the production as it developed a new group of Oompa-Loompas with performers of different heights and backgrounds. The new factory includes numerous other recreations from the movie, including the enormous contract guests sign before entering, the forced-perspective hallway, Everlasting Gobstoppers, golden eggs and Wonkavision 2.0.<\/p>\n<p>The Chocolate Room occupies approximately 40,000 square feet and includes an updated version of the chocolate river, while Wonka\u2019s office recreates the original movie\u2019s unusual half-sized furniture.<\/p>\n<p>The competition begins with 12 Golden Ticket winners, each of whom brings a partner into the factory.
