NEW YORK — <\/span>The State Department is ordering diplomats in its international organizations bureau to use the term \u201csuper intelligence\u201d instead of \u201cartificial intelligence\u201d in all communications following President Donald Trump\u2019s attempt to rebrand the technology in his address to the U.N. General Assembly<\/a> this week.<\/p>\n \u201cFollowing the president’s remarks at the GA today, please change all references of \u2018Artificial Intelligence\u2019 to \u2018Super Intelligence\u2019 in our documents and positions. We will be using \u2018SI\u2019 in all remarks, positions and press elements moving forward,\u201d said an email sent Tuesday to employees by Michael Drager, deputy assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of International Organization Affairs.<\/p>\n That bureau is in charge of U.S. diplomatic missions to all U.N. and multilateral agencies around the world. The email, titled \u201cChange in Nomenclature AI to SI,\u201d was obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday. It was not immediately clear if other State Department bureaus had or would follow suit.<\/p>\n On Tuesday, Trump told the U.N. General Assembly that he would \u201cofficially\u201d change the name of AI, saying the existing name makes the technology seem \u201cfake\u201d and that U.S. government documents would from that point forward use \u201csuper intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe use of the word artificial makes intelligence fake, it makes it sound fake and it is not fake. It\u2019s actually amazing,\u201d Trump said. <\/p>\n The president said at the U.N. that \u201cfrom the point forward\u201d U.S. government documents \u201cwill be changed to use the much more accurate term super as opposed to artificial. So it\u2019s super intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n Drager’s email was sent shortly after Trump’s speech, but it wasn’t clear on Wednesday whether similar orders had been sent at other agencies. Such an order would likely mean adjusting the name of the \u201cAI Force\u201d that Trump announced this weekend to the \u201cSI Force.\u201d<\/p>\n On Wednesday, U.S. representatives used the SI term at a U.N. Security Council meeting about AI, where tech executives urged<\/a> the United Nations’ most powerful body to rein in the developing technology.<\/p>\n AI’s rapid ascent has spurred dire warnings from AI company CEOs<\/a>, lawmakers<\/a> and others about the technology outpacing humans’ ability to control it<\/a> and calls for global guardrails. <\/p>\n Trump has rejected efforts to slow<\/a> the AI development race through greater government oversight, saying he does not want to hinder industry and that the U.S. needs to ensure an edge over China<\/a>.<\/p>\n Trump claimed on social media Monday that the U.S. is leading over China on AI and that he was \u201cnot going to stifle Growth, of something that will be bigger than the Industrial Revolution, or the Internet, itself.\u201d<\/p>\n AI is expected to be a key topic<\/a> when Trump welcomes Chinese leader<\/a> Xi Jinping to Washington for a visit starting Wednesday.<\/p>\n ___<\/p>\n Associated Press writers Josh Boak in Washington and Farnoush Amiri and Seth Borenstein at the United Nations contributed to this report.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
