COLUMBUS, Ohio — <\/span>Billionaire Les Wexner has long been a magnet for political campaigns seeking contributions \u2014 especially in his native Ohio, where the retail tycoon directed a generous portion of his giving to candidates from both parties. Then came the Epstein files<\/a>.<\/p>\n Jeffrey Epstein<\/a>, the late convicted sex offender, was Wexner’s former financial adviser. That relationship and Wexner’s history of political donations has figured prominently in Ohio’s U.S. Senate race, which could end up as the most expensive in the country this year.<\/p>\n Wexner, who has disavowed his prior association with Epstein, contributed about $116,000 to support Republican Sen. Jon Husted from 2001 to 2025, mostly during the two decades he spent in state politics before being appointed to fill<\/a> Vice President JD Vance\u2019s seat last year.<\/p>\n While that\u2019s just a sliver of Husted\u2019s prolific fundraising, his opponent in this year\u2019s race, former Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown<\/a>, is turning it into a campaign cudgel. He\u2019s run at least three different television commercials pounding Husted for receiving more money from Wexner than any other current member of Congress.<\/p>\n Epstein’s Ohio connections are expected to surface anew early next month, when a traveling display showcasing the Justice Department files comes to the state.<\/p>\n \u201cWe want to show these elected officials and the candidates that the public is interested in this topic, and the public is demanding justice for survivors and the public is demanding accountability, no matter how rich and powerful the perpetrators and enablers of these crimes are,\u201d said David Garrett, executive director of the Institute for Primary Facts, the nonprofit that created the exhibit.<\/p>\n Epstein\u2019s decades of associating with some of the world\u2019s most influential people and Congress\u2019 varying attempts to force the Justice Department to release its files on him have flared up in U.S. House and Senate races across the country. In Ohio, it’s been central to a race that will help determine the balance of power in Washington.<\/p>\n Brown’s campaign has promoted a $3,500 donation Wexner gave Husted in July 2025, less than 10 weeks before Husted joined most Senate Republicans<\/a> in defeating a Democratic effort to force release of the Epstein files.<\/p>\n One of his ads featured video of Wexner\u2019s congressional deposition<\/a> in February, during which he confirmed being a longtime political donor to Husted, a former Ohio lawmaker, secretary of state and lieutenant governor.<\/p>\n Another characterized Wexner as \u201can Epstein co-conspirator,\u201d even though Wexner has not been charged and his lawyer said he was not a target of the investigation.<\/p>\n After the barrage of Epstein-related ads against him, the Husted campaign punched back with ads attacking Brown for accepting donations from a number of individuals whose names arose in the Epstein documents. They included Wexner\u2019s wife Abigail, former U.S. Treasury secretary and Harvard president Larry Summers<\/a> and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt<\/a>. Brown accepted no donations from Wexner himself, Federal Election Commission records show.<\/p>\n Husted’s campaign also takes issue with the claim in Brown’s ads that he \u201cvoted to cover up the Epstein files.\u201d Campaign spokesperson Amy Natoce said \u201cthere has only been one vote\u201d that counts on the matter \u2014 the one in November on the Epstein Files Transparency Act<\/a> \u2014 and Husted voted yes. She called the earlier vote \u201cprocedural.\u201d<\/p>\n Wexner, who is 89, stated under oath during his February congressional deposition that he never lobbied or asked Husted or anyone else to block the release of the Epstein files. He told members of Congress that he was \u201cduped by a world-class con man.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n Natoce said Husted donated all available Wexner contributions \u2014 $34,300 \u2014 to an anti-human trafficking charity. The remaining balance had been spent in past campaign cycles.<\/p>\n Brown did not return any of his donations from about a dozen individuals named in the files, who Husted’s ad described as \u201cEpstein associates\u201d even though none was accused of any crimes.<\/p>\n The Epstein Reading Room tour is an exhibit that displays more than 3 million pages released by the Justice Department<\/a>. It has plans to make at least 20 more stops, including Ohio on Oct. 7. <\/p>\n Annie Farmer, an Epstein accuser who has been part of the tour, said the idea that some candidates have received donations from wealthy people with ties to Epstein means they will have an incentive to keep burying the truth.<\/p>\n She was 16 when she said Epstein abused her and her sister, Maria Farmer<\/a>, in the 1990s. Maria, one of the earliest accusers of Epstein, alleges her sexual assault took place in 1996 in New Albany, Ohio, where Epstein had a house while working for Wexner, whose estate is located there.<\/p>\n During his deposition, Wexner testified that he never heard of Maria Farmer until her name appeared in media reports and that he didn\u2019t know whether she had ever stayed on his property.<\/p>\n The accusers are demanding that the Department of Justice do more to investigate<\/a> the wealthy who for decades helped enable Epstein\u2019s abuse. The Associated Press does not name victims of sexual abuse unless they have come forward publicly.<\/p>\n \u201cWe should be asking hard questions to everyone who is related to Epstein and is financially supporting politicians. Are they hoping to benefit from silence?\u201d Annie Farmer said. \u201cTo people with that much wealth, they feel they don\u2019t have to play by the same set of rules. That\u2019s what many people are saying is not right.\u201d <\/p>\n At the reading room tour\u2019s first stop in Dallas, Farmer and other accusers met with Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico<\/a> and Democrat Gina Hinojosa<\/a>, who is running to unseat Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. Talarico criticized his opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, for not meeting with the accusers and called on him to use his position to sue the federal government for its handling of the Epstein files’ release.<\/p>\n In Omaha, Nebraska, independent Senate candidate Dan Osborn pledged to prioritize fighting for justice for victims after visiting a smaller version of the exhibit and meeting some of Epstein’s accusers. He has criticized his Republican opponent, Sen. Pete Ricketts, for being slow to back the release of the Epstein files<\/a>.<\/p>\n In Ohio, the Epstein issue continues to anger \u2014 and divide \u2014 voters across the political spectrum.<\/p>\n A day after Husted announced he would donate his remaining Wexner contributions to charity, he stepped into a Norwalk coffee shop on a campaign stop and, according to the local news account<\/a>, was heckled as a \u201cpedophile protector.\u201d And Brown has been forced to defend his decision not to offload the donations he received from individuals named in the files, as Husted did.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re not tied in any way, the way the co-conspirator is tied in,\u201d Brown told CNN earlier this year.<\/p>\n With Ohio’s early voting starting in less than two weeks, Brown is continuing to focus on Husted\u2019s Wexner contributions. On his X account earlier this month, Brown marked the one-year anniversary of Husted’s vote on the failed Democratic amendment to release all the Epstein files by posting a video.
