He never reached Springsteen. Security guards stopped him before he could approach the singer, Hawke said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.com\/articles\/ethan-hawke-humiliated-close-encounter-133026000.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Today interview<\/a> syndicated by AOL.<\/p>\n<p>The experience stuck with him. \u201cSo I\u2019ve never approached musicians backstage since,\u201d Hawke said. \u201cI felt kind of humiliated.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hawke was talking about Lynyrd Skynyrd while discussing the ending of his new Depression-era thriller. The album was already a major piece of Springsteen history.<\/p>\n<p>Columbia Records released the double album in October 1980, and it became Springsteen\u2019s first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200. Hawke\u2019s plan never reached the autograph stage. \u201cSecurity guards wouldn\u2019t let me,\u201d he told USA Today.<\/p>\n<h2>Lynyrd Skynyrd Brought the Memory Back<\/h2>\n<p>Years later, Hawke found himself backstage near another group he admired. He and Lynyrd Skynyrd appeared on the Oct. 1, 2012 episode of <em>The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson<\/em>. Contemporary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.broadwayworld.com\/bwwtv\/article\/Lynyrd-Skynyrd-to-Perform-New-Song-on-THE-LATE-LATE-SHOW-WITH-CRAIG-FERGUSON-Tonight-101-20121001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coverage of the episode<\/a> listed Hawke as a guest and Lynyrd Skynyrd as the musical act.<\/p>\n<p>Hawke remembered seeing the band rehearsing and encountering its members in the hallways backstage, but he still did not approach them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re rehearsing and you pass in the hallways and stuff,\u201d he told USA Today before explaining that the earlier Springsteen experience was why he stayed back.<\/p>\n<p>Hawke described himself as a lifelong Lynyrd Skynyrd fan. By then, the failed autograph attempt had become a rule he continued following around musicians he admired.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018The Weight\u2019 Brought Lynyrd Skynyrd Back Into the Conversation<\/h2>\n<p>The story surfaced because Lynyrd Skynyrd\u2019s version of \u201cCall Me the Breeze\u201d closes Hawke\u2019s new film <em>The Weight<\/em>. J.J. Cale wrote and originally recorded the song, releasing it on his 1972 debut album <em>Naturally<\/em>. Lynyrd Skynyrd later recorded its own version for the band\u2019s 1974 album <em>Second Helping<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Director Padraic McKinley chose the song for <em>The Weight<\/em>, which stars Hawke as Samuel Murphy, a single father separated from his daughter after being sent to a work camp in Depression-era Oregon. Warden Clancy, played by Russell Crowe, offers Murphy a chance at freedom if he participates in a dangerous gold-smuggling operation.
