Sarah Paulson and Naomi Watts say Season 2 moves further toward the qualities its audience embraced.

In a new Entertainment Weekly first look, Paulson calls the upcoming season “a serve,” while Watts says creator Ryan Murphy and his team figured out what viewers wanted and “doubled down in major ways.”

The change extends beyond bigger jokes and more extreme behavior. Paulson says individual divorce cases occupy less of each episode, creating more room for the relationships, rivalries and changing alliances among Allura Grant, Liberty Ronson, Emerald Greene, Dina Standish and Carr Lane.

Kim Kardashian, Watts, Niecy Nash-Betts, Teyana Taylor, Matthew Noszka, Paulson and Glenn Close all return. Hulu is teasing new allegiances, tested friendships and a revelation that threatens the future of Grant, Ronson & Greene when Season 2 arrives in November.

Season 2 Spends More Time With the Women Than Their Clients

Paulson said the series still has divorce cases and guest stars, but they no longer dominate the structure as heavily as they did during Season 1. The new episodes spend more time following the main characters and the consequences of what happens between them.

“I do feel that there’s been a little bit of a pullback on the cases and more about the interpersonal dynamics of the women,” Paulson told EW. “The episodes center less around them and more around the group of us and our dynamics and that interplay.”

Watts also promises “high-level surprise” and “high-level drama,” while Paulson says the season contains significantly more comedy. The shift gives the ensemble more opportunity to play inside the exaggerated tone that became one of the series’ defining qualities.

The approach follows a first season that was savaged by many critics but found a sizable streaming audience. Variety reported that All’s Fair debuted at No. 1 on Hulu and became the service’s biggest original scripted series premiere in three years based on its first three days of viewing.

Carr Does Not Kill Anyone, but Paulson Still Promises a Surprise

Carr entered All’s Fair as an unpredictable outsider and finished Season 1 in particularly dangerous territory. She confessed homicidal thoughts to her therapist while trying to work her way into Grant, Ronson & Greene as Dina was framed for the murder of Emerald’s rapist.

Paulson is willing to eliminate one possibility for the next chapter. “I don’t commit a homicidal act in the second season, I can tell you that unequivocally,” she told EW, before conceding that she still would not put such an act past Carr.

The actress says another surprise is coming for the character, whose extreme language and behavior gave Paulson freedom she rarely gets in other roles. She described Carr as someone for whom almost nothing feels socially or emotionally off limits.

Paulson also called the character “a sneak attack” and said playing someone unconcerned with how others judge her can be liberating. Season 2 appears ready to preserve that volatility rather than make Carr easier to predict.

Liberty Is Moving Beyond the Polite Outsider Role

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Naomi Watts (@naomiwatts)

Liberty enters Season 2 after calling off her engagement to Dr. Reggie Ramirez, and Watts says the reserved English attorney may begin showing sides of herself that the other women have not seen before.

During the first season, Liberty often occupied a slightly different space from the louder personalities around her. Watts described her as “very buttoned up” and somewhat separated from the group because she feels like an outsider.

That distance may narrow as the series leans further into comedy and the ensemble’s more outrageous behavior. Watts said there are “some good laughs to be had” and confirmed that the show is deliberately pursuing its most extreme instincts rather than softening them.

“Ryan likes to feed the fans, and he’s done exactly that,” Watts said. “We figured out what this was, what everyone wanted, and he’s doubled down in major ways.”

The Show’s Divisive First Season Helped Define What Comes Next

The cast was already aware of the unusually negative critical reaction while Season 1 was airing. Watts said there were conflicting messages about the show and how people viewed it, but the ensemble remained close and continued enjoying what they had made.

She also rejected the idea that the series had ever been aiming for restrained prestige drama. “We knew we weren’t making Shakespeare,” Watts told EW, describing All’s Fair as entertainment designed to give viewers something heightened and escapist.

The strong streaming numbers gave Hulu a reason to keep that identity intact. Rather than rebuilding the series around the criticism, Season 2 retains its core cast, glossy divorce law setting and exaggerated tone while shifting more attention toward the relationships inside the firm.

Paulson offered a simple prediction for returning viewers: “If you liked it before, you’re gonna love it now.” She left open one possibility for everyone else too. “And if you didn’t like it before, you might like it now.”

Source link

All’s Fair is not responding to its first season’s hostile reviews by becoming quieter or more conventional.
