Kirk because <em>Star Trek<\/em> had already failed once.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking with Paul Wesley, the actor currently playing a younger Kirk on <em>Star Trek: Strange New Worlds<\/em>, Shatner revisited the unusual sequence that brought him aboard the Enterprise. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interviewmagazine.com\/culture\/paul-wesley-william-shatner-captain-kirk-star-trek-strange-new-worlds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Interview Magazine<\/a> published their conversation on Sept. 8, exactly 60 years after the original series made its U.S. television debut.<\/p>\n<p>The first <em>Star Trek<\/em> pilot starred Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Christopher Pike, but NBC declined to order the series. Instead of abandoning the concept, however, the network took the unusual step of financing a second pilot with another story and a substantially different cast.<\/p>\n<p>Shatner was working in New York when he was asked to fly to Los Angeles, watch what had already been made and consider playing the new captain. His reaction was immediate. \u201cMy gosh, that\u2019s really different and interesting,\u201d he remembered thinking.<\/p>\n<h2>NBC Rejected \u2018The Cage\u2019 but Did Not Give Up on \u2018Star Trek\u2019<\/h2>\n<p><noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Star Trek: The Original Series  &quot;Where No Man Has Gone Before&quot;\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Oj5GjmDT0G4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>The original pilot, \u201cThe Cage,\u201d put Hunter in command of the Enterprise as Pike, with Majel Barrett playing Number One and Leonard Nimoy appearing as a noticeably more emotional version of Spock. NBC did not buy the series from that version, but executives saw enough potential in Gene Roddenberry\u2019s concept to request another attempt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.startrek.com\/news\/50-years-later-where-no-man-has-gone-before\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">StarTrek.com\u2019s production history<\/a> says Roddenberry and Desilu Studios had demonstrated that they could make mature science fiction, but NBC wanted the next version to be a simpler, less erotic and more action-oriented adventure with a somewhat different cast.<\/p>\n<p>Shatner remembered the second-pilot order as something extraordinary. NBC essentially asked for another script, another draft and a recast. \u201cI\u2019ve never heard of it before or after,\u201d he told Wesley.<\/p>\n<p>Shatner came aboard as Kirk, while Nimoy was the major holdover from the original cast. \u201cThey recast everybody except Leonard,\u201d Shatner recalled, crediting Nimoy with already finding something distinctive in Spock.<\/p>\n<p>The resulting pilot, \u201cWhere No Man Has Gone Before,\u201d gave NBC what it was looking for. The network approved <em>Star Trek<\/em> for a series, although the episode itself did not become the television premiere. \u201cThe Man Trap\u201d introduced the show to U.S. audiences on Sept. 8, 1966.<\/p>\n<h2>Shatner Did Not Go Through a Traditional Kirk Audition<\/h2>\n<p>Shatner\u2019s path into the captain\u2019s chair was also less conventional than a normal competitive audition. At the time, he was based in New York and working extensively in live television, experience he believes had already given producers enough material to judge whether he could carry the role.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was contacted and asked whether he would come to Los Angeles to view the earlier pilot \u201cwith the idea of playing the captain.\u201d After watching it, he was drawn to how different the project looked from conventional television.<\/p>\n<h2>Shatner Says the Science-Fiction \u2018Magic\u2019 Won Him Over<\/h2>\n<p>What caught his attention was its visual imagination: unusual makeup, strange beings and a fictional universe that was not bound by the rules of an ordinary drama.<\/p>\n<p>He described being attracted to the \u201cmagic\u201d behind the project, including the exaggerated heads and pulsing effects seen in the first pilot. Spock\u2019s pointed ears became another example. Shatner recalled that there had been pressure to remove them, but the people behind the series refused.<\/p>\n<p>A story could introduce an impossible creature or a civilization on a distant planet and ask the audience to accept it because nobody actually knew what might exist there. \u201cThat science fiction magic was a big propellant in the popularity of <em>Star Trek<\/em>,\u201d Shatner told Wesley.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Paul Wesley Also Got Kirk Without a Traditional Audition<\/h2>\n<p><noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Paul Wesley on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds&#039; James T. Kirk at San Diego Comic-Con 2025\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dvBGk9syf_s?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>Wesley\u2019s path to the same character six decades later turned out to have an unexpected similarity. He told Shatner that <em>Strange New Worlds<\/em> showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers contacted him specifically. His agent initially asked whether he wanted to speak with Goldsman and Myers over Zoom without explaining the role.<\/p>\n<p>Wesley said he became stunned when he learned they wanted to discuss Kirk and were interested specifically in him. Wesley remembered telling the producers that nobody other than Shatner had played Kirk on television and realizing as he said it how significant the opportunity felt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wesley made his first appearance as Kirk in the Season 1 finale of <em>Strange New Worlds<\/em> in 2022 and has continued playing the younger version of the character as the series moves closer to the era Shatner originated.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplus.com\/sneak-peak\/star-trek-strange-new-worlds-season-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Season 4 is currently streaming on Paramount+<\/a>, with new episodes scheduled through Sept. 24.
