Together, the deaths of two of rap\u2019s biggest stars came to symbolize a combustible era commonly reduced to three words: <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tupac-shakur-keffe-rap-rival-notorious-big-2567b97c8d1542fe6c7a0804aaa2b386\">East versus West.<\/a> The mystery was compounded by reluctant witnesses, distrust of law enforcement and questions about why police in Las Vegas and Compton hadn&#8217;t pursued charges until now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Now, a Las Vegas jury has delivered something that seemed elusive for decades: a conviction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \"><a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tupac-shakur-killing-las-vegas-trial-4529257714634e87ed258fde044f948b\">Duane \u201cKeffe D\u201d Davis<\/a> was found guilty Monday of <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tupac-shakur-trial-las-vegas-duane-davis-0b0b080d73f91cd122b6dd438e5bbb80\">first-degree murder<\/a> with use of a deadly weapon in Shakur\u2019s 1996 killing. Jurors deliberated for less than three hours. Davis was the only person ever charged in the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The verdict provides a legal answer to one of hip-hop\u2019s most enduring mysteries. But after decades of books, documentaries and podcasts on theories about Shakur\u2019s death, another question remains: Can a conviction bring closure \u2014 and if so, for whom?<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The emotion of that long wait was visible in the courtroom on Monday. Shakur\u2019s sister, Sekyiwa \u201cSet\u201d Shakur, cried after the verdict was read and reached back toward someone sitting behind her. She and other members of Shakur\u2019s family later embraced prosecutors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">When Davis was charged in 2023, Shakur&#8217;s sister called the development \u201ca pivotal moment,\u201d while making clear that accountability remained the goal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cIt\u2019s important to me that the world, the country, the justice system, and our people acknowledge the gravity of the passing of this man, my brother, my mother\u2019s son, my father\u2019s son,\u201d she said at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Prosecutor Binu Palal echoed that distinction after Monday\u2019s verdict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cTo all of us, to me, Tupac Shakur was an icon or an idea,\u201d Palal said. \u201cBut to the family, Tupac Shakur was a brother, a son, a cousin, a loved person ripped from them 30 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Chuck Creekmur, co-founder of the hip-hop website AllHipHop, said he believes Shakur\u2019s family may finally find some measure of closure, but he expects questions and theories surrounding the rapper\u2019s death to persist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cI thought it was a closing chapter,\u201d he said. \u201cBut now, I realize I\u2019m pretty convinced it\u2019s just opening another chapter.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">For some, the verdict may provide a sense of resolution \u2014 or at least accountability \u2014 but closure might still be out of reach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">On \u201cThe Breakfast Club\u201d Tuesday, <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/charlamagne-tha-god\">Charlamagne tha God<\/a> also reflected on what the verdict could mean for Shakur\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cNothing brings your loved one back,\u201d he said. \u201cAll you think about is what his life would have been like the past 30 years, and you\u2019re constantly reminded of him because he\u2019s such an iconic figure. So you\u2019ll never truly have, you know, peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The prosecution\u2019s case against Davis centered on an individual act of retaliation rather than a sweeping, coast-to-coast battle between gangs and their associated record labels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Hours before Shakur was shot on Sept. 7, 1996, he and members of his entourage were captured on surveillance video beating Davis\u2019 nephew, Orlando \u201cBaby Lane\u201d Anderson, inside the MGM Grand after a Mike Tyson fight. Prosecutors said Davis then obtained a gun, gathered a group that included Anderson and went looking for Shakur and Death Row Records co-founder Marion \u201cSuge\u201d Knight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Davis was not accused of firing the fatal shots. Prosecutors argued he provided the weapon and helped orchestrate the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">For Creekmur, the trial exposed how inadequate the familiar East-West label has always been. He pointed to the fractured friendships, gang affiliations, street politics, business interests and media amplification.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThis trial really peeled back the layers on how deep this really goes, and how far from hip-hop it really was,\u201d he said. \u201cIt just really wasn\u2019t about hip-hop at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Creekmur said that if the conflict had truly been about hip-hop, the rivalry would have played out through diss records rather than escalating into street violence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cIf it was hip-hop, it would have ended with a few songs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">For those who lived through the era, the reality was more complicated than the East-West label suggested. Shakur was born in New York, maintained friendships there and had close relationships that didn\u2019t fit neatly along geographic lines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThat was Bad Boy and Death Row,\u201d said veteran hip-hop journalist Dave \u201cDavey D\u201d Cook, who wrote about Shakur during his years in Oakland. \u201cThey just happened to be on two different coasts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The trial presented a collision of personal feuds, record-label allegiances and evolving street-gang relationships. Shakur and Death Row had associations with Mob Piru, while Davis was a leader in the South Compton Crips.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cI think the public missed the nuance and the accuracy of what was really going on,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was being sensationalized on radio and in magazines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">He remembers how charged the atmosphere became in the &#8217;90s. After Shakur\u2019s death, Wallace appeared on a Bay Area radio program and said, \u201cWe\u2019re not that powerful, yo.\u201d Some listeners heard the last word as \u201cyet,\u201d Cook recalled, interpreting the remark as provocative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Years later, he listened again and heard it differently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cTensions were so high, and there was so much angst in the air that we didn\u2019t even hear him clearly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Davis, 63, spent years publicly talking about a killing that was never prosecuted \u2014 and those words ultimately became central to the case against him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Prosecutors pointed to his accounts in interviews with investigators, documentaries, online appearances and his 2019 memoir, \u201cCompton Street Legend.\u201d His defense argued the stories were exaggerated or fabricated for money and notoriety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThe strength of our case was Mr. Davis \u2026 and his mouth,\u201d Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said after the verdict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Charlamagne made a similar point while giving Davis \u201cDonkey of the Day\u201d on the popular radio show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cIf you give a man enough microphones, he\u2019ll create Exhibit A,\u201d Charlamagne said. \u201cThere was a time when investigators had to interrogate suspects. Now all you gotta do is give a brother a podcast setup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">But Charlamagne saw a larger lesson in Davis\u2019 decades of public storytelling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cSometimes surviving consequences for too long convinces you that consequences no longer exist,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Wallace\u2019s 1997 killing remains unsolved, while speculation about who else might have been involved in Shakur&#8217;s killing persists, along with more outlandish theories questioning whether he died at all. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">For prosecutors, the verdict closes the case \u2014 at least for now. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cAt this point, we don\u2019t believe we have sufficient evidence to charge anyone else with the death of Tupac Shakur,\u201d Wolfson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Creekmur expects it to be harder to put some larger questions to rest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThe fact that there were no convictions, it allowed conspiracy theories to fester,\u201d he said, \u201cjust like an open wound.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Creekmur said the verdict may provide \u201ca certain kind of closure,\u201d though he doubts it will settle all of the questions surrounding Shakur&#8217;s death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Cook offered a similar assessment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC eTIW sUzSN \">\u201cI think that\u2019s one chapter in this larger narrative that has been closed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/US\/wireStory\/tupac-shakurs-murder-trial-ended-guilty-verdict-outcome-136154895\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LOS ANGELES &#8212; For nearly 30 years, the story of Tupac Shakur\u2019s killing existed somewhere between an unsolved murder and hip-hop mythology.
