Kyle Kirkwood says IndyCar should not return to Washington, D.C., but his reason has nothing to do with the track, the traffic or the six caution periods that interrupted the inaugural Freedom 250.<\/p>\n
The Andretti Global driver would simply prefer to remain the only person who has ever won the race. Asked whether IndyCar should return next year, Kirkwood admitted he had \u201cbiased opinions either direction\u201d before eventually casting his personal vote for a one-and-done event.<\/p>\n
His answer changed when he considered the question from Andretti\u2019s perspective. Kirkwood said the team would welcome another opportunity because it believes its equipment is particularly strong on temporary circuits, even though he personally likes what an exclusive place in the record book would mean.<\/p>\n
There is a more serious question behind the joke. Kirkwood doubts a conventional race weekend could recreate an event built around the United States\u2019 250th anniversary, while organizers say any return will depend largely on whether the financial model still works once that one-time national celebration is over.<\/p>\n
