It now weighs the question of <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/lindsay-clancy-trial-closing-arguments-5b5f90dbeb5c39fac56d9520201052ab\">whether she should be held criminally responsible<\/a> for killing her three young children at her Massachusetts home in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Both sides agree Clancy did it. But her attorneys argue the former labor and delivery nurse was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time, and that poor mental healthcare exacerbated her condition. Prosecutors argue she intentionally planned the killings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">If Clancy is convicted, her sentence could be as severe as life in prison. If you or someone you know needs help, the national suicide and crisis lifeline in the U.S. is available by calling or texting 988.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">___<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Clancy&#8217;s former husband, Patrick Clancy, was first to take the stand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">In emotional testimony, he described the day he found his wife after she tried to kill herself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Lindsay Clancy had sent him out to get takeout food and medication for their daughter, which prosecutors argue was an excuse to get him out of the house.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">He came home to find the house unusually silent, before finding blood throughout the main bedroom and a window open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Jurors listened to <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/lindsay-clancy-murder-trial-postpartum-psychosis-f393af75765dfbc2979deca05225fcfe\">the 911 call Patrick Clancy made<\/a> after finding his wife outside in the snow. Clancy can be heard speaking with his wife, then tells the dispatcher he\u2019s going to check on the children. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Moments later, he howls and cries after finding his children in the basement. The confused dispatcher repeatedly asks what happened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cShe killed the kids!\u201d he yells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Clancy&#8217;s mother, mother-in-law, sister, friends and co-workers testified that Clancy struggled with her mental health after giving birth to Callan, the youngest of her three children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Clancy&#8217;s mother-in-law, Susan Clancy, said she and her former daughter-in-law were close. Both worked as labor and delivery nurses. She <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/lindsay-clancy-murder-trial-301ed728e868ec398ee06864ea27b3f6\">described Lindsay as a wonderful mother.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">But Susan Clancy testified that Lindsay had become anxious, paranoid and suicidal, and that the psychiatric care she was getting wasn&#8217;t helping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cShe felt unwell. She had insomnia. She was losing her appetite. She was very anxious and sad,\u201d Susan Clancy said. \u201cShe was begging for help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Lindsay Clancy\u2019s mother, Paula Musgrove, testified that her daughter <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/lindsay-clancy-postpartum-murder-trial-prosecution-5fa1e451f824009b35f8888702356aaa\">was scared of sleeping alone<\/a>, became paranoid and believed the medications she was taking \u201cwere destroying her mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cMom, will you please come up and stay with me for a bit? I\u2019m really sick. Something is wrong,\u201d Clancy wrote in an October 2022 text message that Paula Musgrove read in court. \u201cI had horrible insomnia all night, and I just don\u2019t know how I am going to get through the day. \u2026 It\u2019s just really scary, and I don\u2019t want to be alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Clancy saw several doctors about her declining mental health, and eventually checked herself in to a psychiatric hospital. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Her lawyer, Kevin Reddington, argued that she was misdiagnosed and overmedicated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">As he cross-examined one of her psychiatrists, <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/lindsay-clancy-murder-trial-psychiatric-hospital-c977c42546d3b496df6d44924149451b\">Dr. Jennifer Tufts<\/a>, Reddington questioned her expertise, prescribing decisions and use of 25-minute video appointments with limited time for talk therapy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \"> At one point, Reddington implied that Tufts was a box-checking \u201crobot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cWhat did you do? You had a woman who was telling you she felt hopeless,\u201d he asked as they discussed an appointment about two months before the killings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cI told her that this was something we could address, that there was hope, that there are treatments, that there are different types of programs,\u201d Tufts said, \u201cso she knew that she still had options and a reason to hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Paul Zeizel, a clinical and forensic psychologist who visited Lindsay Clancy in the hospital after she killed the children, testified that he overheard her saying that <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/lindsay-clancy-murder-trial-psychologist-fbf384080f82998939dc76a75ca6ba7d\">a disembodied male voice<\/a> had told her she had no choice but to kill her children and then herself. Zeizel said he believed Clancy wasn&#8217;t responsible for her actions because of her deep mental illness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Prosecutors called a rebuttal witness, forensic psychologist Kirk Heilbrun, who said he <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/lindsay-clancy-murder-trial-mental-health-50bc0cd6e8bfb5d15cfbcdf9907ca1b2\">didn\u2019t believe Clancy had hallucinated voices.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cOne of the things that she said when I asked about what happened, is that in the course of strangling each child, she said, \u2018Go to God, baby. Go to God,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cThat was part of her expectation that she and the children would be together in heaven with God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Dr. Gregory Saathoff, a senior psychiatrist for the FBI\u2019s Behavioral Analysis Unit, <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/lindsay-clancy-trial-postpartum-psychosis-98dd823104893f0ba0fbfbc9f8145f5e\">testified for prosecutors<\/a> that Clancy \u201chad the capacity to know right from wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">After testimony was complete, each side got about an hour to make their closing argument to the jury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Reddington showed the jury a photograph of the Clancy family, looking happy, and a second one of Lindsay Clancy in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cHow does this turn into this?&#8221; Reddington asked. \u201cHow? Because of the damn medicine and the lousy medical care that she got.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Prosecutor Jennifer Sprague said criticizing the mental health system was \u201ca distraction.\u201d She said Clancy chose to kill her children because doing so would make it easier to kill herself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC eTIW sUzSN \"> \u201cShe was depressed. She was exhausted. She was done. She didn\u2019t want to try anymore. She felt damaged,\u201d Sprague said. \u201cBut those kids, those kids were her protective factor.
