William \u201cExtra Billy\u201d Smith, as well as Confederate Dr. Hunter Holmes McGuire, had been displayed in Capitol Square, a public park and civic campus near the state Capitol, for more than 100 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The Virginia legislature ordered the statues\u2019 removal during its 2026 session.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThis doesn\u2019t change the history of the Civil War,\u201d said former Democratic State Sen. Adam Ebbin, who sponsored the legislation. \u201cIt changes who we choose to venerate on the Capitol lawn.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Efforts to remove Confederate statues from prominent places of honor in Richmond began in 2018, estimated Democratic state Sen. Mike Jones. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThey\u2019re symbols,\u201d Jones said of the monuments. \u201cIs this what the Commonwealth is about?
