Parton’s fame soared to meteoric heights with the release of hit singles including “Jolene,” “Love Is Like a Butterfly,” and “I Will Always Love You,” as well as popular albums like 1971’s “Coat of Many Colors,” 1973’s “My Tennessee Mountain Home.”<\/p>\n In 1980, she released the album “9 to 5 and Odd Jobs.” The album included the title track “9 to 5,” which served as the theme song for the film of the same that debuted that same year.<\/p>\n More recently, Parton released an album of rock ‘n’ roll songs and covers, simply titled “Rockstar.” The album featured collaborations with names such as Ann Wilson, Rob Halford, Nikki Sixx, John 5, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Linda Perry, Pink, Brandi Carlile, Chris Stapleton, Miley Cyrus and more.<\/p>\n Parton is the recipient of 10 Grammy Awards out of 55 total nominations, according to the Recording Academy website<\/a>.<\/p>\n In 2014, the Record Industry Association of America recognized Parton for sales of over 100 million units worldwide, including 19 RIAA-certified gold, platinum and multi-platinum albums out of the more than 100 studio, live and compilation albums she released during her six-decade-plus recording career.<\/p>\n Parton’s career is notable for more than just her music.<\/p>\n She jumpstarted her TV and film career with her singing role on “The Porter Wagoner Show” and saw continued success with the 1980\u00a0film “9 to 5,” in which she starred alongside Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dabney Coleman, Elizabeth Wilson and Sterling Hayden.<\/p>\n Further big screen success followed, with Parton’s starring role in 1982’s “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.” The film, based on the 1978 stage musical of the same name, also starred Burt Reynolds, Jim Nabors, Charles Durning and Dom DeLuise.<\/p>\n In 1984, Parton starred in “Rhinestone” alongside Sylvester Stallone, and in 1989, she snagged a leading role in the film “Steel Magnolias” alongside co-stars Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Julia Roberts.<\/p>\n Parton made additional TV appearances later in her career, with spots on “Designing Women,” “Hannah Montana,” “Reba,” and more recently, “Grace & Frankie.”<\/p>\n She has also appeared in a wide variety of television specials and television films throughout her career.<\/p>\n In June 2024, Parton announced plans for an autobiographical stage musical based on her life. “Dolly: A True Original Musical,” with music and lyrics by Parton and a book by Parton and Maria S. Schlatter, is set to open at the St. James Theatre in New York City on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2027 — what would have been Parton’s 81st birthday.<\/p>\n Parton’s career interests did not end with the world of entertainment.<\/p>\n In June 2025, Forbes estimated Parton’s net financial worth<\/a> at $450 million, placing her at No. 78 on its list of America’s wealthiest self-made women. Patron notably retained ownership of the songs she wrote, recordings of which number over 1,000.<\/p>\n However, much of Parton’s wealth came from her theme park, Dollywood, located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, which she bought an interest in back in 1986, adding her name to the park itself.<\/p>\n The park, which first opened under different ownership in 1961, “remains rooted in the authenticity and warmth Dolly Parton envisioned when she partnered with the Herschend family in 1986,” the Pigeon Forge chamber of commerce<\/a> wrote in an article on its website last year.<\/p>\n Following her death on Tuesday, the Dollywood team shared a statement on the park’s website, writing, “Dolly’s heartfelt wish was that Dollywood always remain a place of joy, hope and togetherness — a space where families and friends could honor her memory, not with silence, but with laughter, music and shared dreams.”<\/p>\n “Dolly’s enduring legacy extends beyond her music and generosity to her remarkable work ethic — an inspiration to people everywhere,” the statement read in part, noting that the park would remain open on Wednesday, “as Dolly wanted.”<\/p>\n Parton also authored several books in her lifetime, including memoirs, a number of children’s books, and even a cookbook, “Good Lookin’ Cookin,” which she wrote with her sister Rachel Parton George. She also authored a novel, “Run, Rose, Run,” with James Patterson in 2022.<\/p>\n One of Parton’s final business ventures was a gas station and restaurant, Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stop, located off exit 22 on I-65 in Cornersville, Tennessee.<\/p>\n “I’m sure some of you are wondering why I wanted a truck stop. Well, I couldn’t leave it to beavers,” Parton said in remarks at a grand opening ceremony for the travel stop, referencing the popular gas station chain Buc-ee’s, whose mascot is a beaver named Buc-ee.<\/p>\n Parton prided herself on her philanthropic endeavors<\/a> throughout her life.<\/p>\n In 1995, she launched the nonprofit Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, <\/a>which gifts books to children from birth until age 5. The organization, which has since gone global, has gifted more than 304 million books since its inception, according to the its website.<\/p>\n In 2020, Parton\u00a0donated $1 million<\/a>\u00a0to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to support research into COVID-19.
