As his illness progressed and he became bedridden, she said the physical and emotional changes surrounding his care were impossible for them not to notice.

Bullock did not expect the two children to cope in the same way. Louis eventually created more distance from Randall’s illness while continuing to support his mother, whereas Laila remained closely connected for longer before asking for more separation herself.

Bullock said she tried to recognize what each one could handle and respect the boundaries they set. The new details, also highlighted by Just Jared, offer her most detailed account yet of parenting through the private illness that ended with Randall’s death in August 2023.

Bullock Let Her Kids Set Their Own Boundaries

Bullock said Louis and Laila were “completely aware” of Randall’s illness simply because they were living with its effects. “They could see. They have eyes,” she said. “And they are very, very astute kids.”

She explained that the children noticed not only Randall’s physical decline but changes in the behavior of everyone around him as Bullock became increasingly focused on arranging his care. She also had a child therapist available to help Louis and Laila process the situation.

Bullock told AARP that the broader caregiving experience left her with a new understanding of how isolated caregivers can become. Inside the family, however, she was determined not to make her children carry responsibilities they were not ready for.

Louis Stepped Back While Laila Stayed Close Longer

Bullock said her children ultimately responded “very differently.” About two years before Randall died, Louis decided that being so close to the situation was no longer healthy for him. He did not stop supporting his mother, but he shifted toward helping in ways he could manage without becoming deeply involved in Randall’s day-to-day care.

Bullock supported that decision in part because she did not want her son feeling responsible for filling an adult role in the household. “I didn’t want him to become the man of the family at that age,” she said, according to PEOPLE.

She was also conscious that Louis was already growing up during the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic. When he identified a level of involvement that felt safer for him, Bullock said she told him, “Absolutely, you go. I got this.”

Laila reacted differently. Bullock said her daughter remained “more bonded” with Randall until roughly six months before his death. Eventually, Laila asked her mother to decline when people called her over to visit him. Bullock agreed without closing the door entirely. She told her daughter that if she ever did want to visit, Bullock would accompany her and would be ready to leave whenever Laila wanted.

Bullock Created a Separate Care Area Inside Her Home

The physical layout of Bullock’s home helped her honor those boundaries. As Randall’s condition progressed, Bullock said she was able to wall off an entire section of the house for him and his care team, complete with a separate entrance and access to an outdoor garden.

The arrangement was partly a response to the pandemic. Bullock was extremely cautious about who entered the home and said visitors and caregivers had to undergo strict COVID testing. Bullock coordinated nurses while continuing to parent, telling SmartLess that finding appropriate in-home help during the pandemic became an extraordinarily complicated operation.

She has emphasized that having the financial resources to provide that level of care placed her in a privileged position. At the same time, she said money did not provide a road map for the emotional or practical demands of becoming a caregiver.

Randall’s Request for Privacy Left Bullock Carrying Much of It Quietly

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Gesine Bullock-Prado (@gesinebp)

Randall asked Bullock not to disclose his ALS diagnosis, a request she honored. “I wasn’t allowed to speak about it.
