Addressing commissioner Cathy Engelbert directly, Jenner said, \u201cCathy, XX, you\u2019re in. XY, you\u2019re out. It\u2019s that simple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her comments followed declarations by Kanter Freedom and White that they intend to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft while saying they identify as women. Both announcements were made as challenges to the league\u2019s eligibility language.<\/p>\n<p>The WNBA, however, has not said either former NBA player is eligible. XY, you\u2019re out. It\u2019s that simple,\u201d Jenner said.<\/p>\n<p>Jenner also said she wants to \u201cprotect women\u2019s sports\u201d and invoked Title IX while making her argument. Title IX itself governs sex discrimination in federally funded education programs and activities.<\/p>\n<p>The former Olympic decathlon champion has publicly taken similar positions for years. As <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/wnba-transgender-task-force-99e137102826677747da7986025c8b69\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Associated Press reported<\/a>, the agreement states that \u201conly players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.\u201d It does not provide more specific language addressing gender identity or sex assigned at birth.<\/p>\n<p>That absence is what Kanter Freedom and White have sought to highlight with their announcements. Both said they identify as women while declaring themselves eligible for the 2027 draft.<\/p>\n<p>Engelbert told team presidents and general managers that player eligibility rules are collectively bargained and described transgender participation as a \u201ccomplex and nuanced topic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said the league would continue discussions with teams and the Women\u2019s National Basketball Players Association. She also stressed that \u201cpreserving the integrity of our game and ensuring fair competition\u201d would remain among the league\u2019s highest priorities.<\/p>\n<h2>The League Says There Is No Immediate Eligibility Case to Decide<\/h2>\n<p>The WNBA went further after league officials met to discuss transgender athletes along with online abuse and other issues affecting players. \u201cThere are no immediate eligibility matters affecting the WNBA,\u201d a league spokesperson said. The statement also denounced what the league described as \u201cbad-faith efforts\u201d to use the subject to \u201cdemean or marginalize others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2027 draft will not take place until next April, leaving the league time to continue its discussions before any potential eligibility question connected to that draft would have to be resolved. No transgender woman has ever appeared on a WNBA roster, according to the AP.<\/p>\n<h2>The Debate Grew After Sophie Cunningham\u2019s Comments<\/h2>\n<p>The broader controversy had already intensified after Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham spoke publicly about transgender participation in girls\u2019 and women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n<p>Cunningham said she wanted to protect young female athletes who, in her words, \u201cshouldn\u2019t have to go against biological men.\u201d She later pushed back against claims that her position amounted to hatred toward transgender people. <a href=\"https:\/\/frontofficesports.com\/caitlyn-jenner-reacts-kanter-white-wnba-transgender-controversy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Front Office Sports noted<\/a> that Cunningham\u2019s remarks were followed by demonstrations both supporting and opposing her position.<\/p>\n<p>There have also been prominent voices inside women\u2019s basketball arguing for transgender inclusion. Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said earlier in August that she views access to sports for transgender children as a human-rights issue. \u201cWe need to protect trans kids,\u201d Reeve said. \u201cEvery kid has a right to sports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The WNBPA has taken a similarly cautious approach to the debate. In a statement, the players\u2019 union said it embraces \u201cjustice, equity, diversity, and inclusion,\u201d condemned hate and demonization directed at transgender people and said it would continue participating in difficult conversations about the issue.
