Clarkson jokingly introduced the film as an Oscar-worthy project before explaining her participation in \u201ctwo words: contractually obligated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She then gave the movie an even shorter review: \u201cIt\u2019s s\u2014.\u201d Clarkson said daughter River Rose, 12, and son Remington, 10, are not allowed to watch it, even though their nanny told her she loved the film when it came out.<\/p>\n<p>The spring-break musical paired Clarkson with <em>American Idol<\/em> runner-up Justin Guarini less than a year after the show\u2019s first finale. She recalled thinking that winning the competition suddenly did not feel much like winning once she learned a film was part of the deal.<\/p>\n<p>When a concertgoer defended <em>From Justin to Kelly<\/em>, Clarkson teased that the fan was watching it through \u201cloving eyes\u201d before delivering her own blunt assessment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy kids, I\u2019ve banned them from watching,\u201d Clarkson said. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/movies\/la-ca-mn-kelly-clarkson-uglydolls-20190502-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019 interview with the Los Angeles Times<\/a>, she called its production \u201ca very miserable time of my life\u201d and said she cried and consulted multiple lawyers but could not escape the contractual obligation.<\/p>\n<p>Her concern was that the movie could damage the singing career she had pursued through <em>American Idol<\/em>. Clarkson said she pushed for \u201cMiss Independent\u201d to be released before the film and later credited the single\u2019s success with helping her move past the project.<\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/3725769\/kelly-clarkson-piece-by-piece-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TIME asked her in 2015<\/a> when she planned to tell her then-infant daughter River about the movie, Clarkson answered, \u201cNever! We don\u2019t have to show her that!\u201d When asked whether she planned simply to pretend the movie did not exist, Clarkson said that was already what she did and added that she wanted it to \u201cgo away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She has occasionally been willing to revisit it for a joke. During a 2015 appearance on <em>Watch What Happens Live<\/em>, Clarkson and Andy Cohen reenacted a scene originally performed by Clarkson and Guarini.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018From Justin to Kelly\u2019 Earned Less Than $5 Million in Theaters<\/h2>\n<p>Directed by Robert Iscove, <em>From Justin to Kelly<\/em> follows two young people who meet and fall for each other during spring break in Fort Lauderdale. The 81-minute musical opened June 20, 2003, with 20th Century Fox distributing the film roughly nine months after Clarkson won <em>American Idol<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The movie opened with approximately $2.7 million from 2,001 theaters and ultimately earned $4,928,883 domestically against a reported $12 million production budget, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/release\/rl408258049\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Box Office Mojo<\/a>. Critical reception was equally unforgiving. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/from_justin_to_kelly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> currently gives the movie an 8% Tomatometer score based on 63 reviews.<\/p>\n<p>Clarkson nevertheless identified parts of the experience she remembers fondly during her latest Las Vegas story. She said she enjoyed the dancing and particularly valued working on the music with musician and producer Tommy Sims. \u201cThe music part, that was fun,\u201d Clarkson said. \u201cSee?
