President Donald Trump said Sunday that the U.S. was \u201csemi-negotiating\u201d with Iran amid reports from Iranian state media that no formal negotiations were underway between the two countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are low-keying it,” Trump said during a brief phone call with Axios<\/a> on Sunday.<\/p>\n

“We are only semi-negotiating with them. We are just watching Iran with its huge inflation and the fact they have no money,\u201d Trump added, Axios reported.<\/p>\n

Iran confirmed earlier Sunday that “messages were being exchanged” through intermediaries but declined to call them negotiations.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump stressed that Iran \u2018is in very bad shape\u2019 economically and has no money to pay its troops,\u201d according to Axios, and further said \u201cthe U.S. naval blockade has exacerbated the Iranian regime’s economic crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n

“It will work out. It always works out. It’s like a chess game,” the president also said, according to Axios.<\/p>\n
