Caitlin Clark declined to say whether she agrees with Indiana Fever teammate Sophie Cunningham\u2019s position on transgender athletes, instead directing the policy debate toward sports leagues and governing organizations.<\/p>\n

Clark addressed the controversy after Indiana\u2019s 108-100 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday, August 2.<\/p>\n

Her response acknowledged the public discussion surrounding Cunningham without endorsing or rejecting her teammate\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n

Cunningham first expressed her position in a July interview with ESPN.<\/p>\n

Clark Left the Policy Question to Sports Officials<\/h2>\n

Clark was asked how the Fever were navigating the attention generated by Cunningham\u2019s call to exclude transgender girls and women from girls\u2019 and women\u2019s sports. \u201cI think we\u2019re excellent,\u201d Clark initially responded during the official Fever postgame press conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She said the controversy had not become a regular subject of conversation within the team. \u201cI think it\u2019s for leagues and governing bodies to work with their athletes to find solutions,\u201d Clark continued.<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old guard then redirected attention to Indiana\u2019s performance.\u201cOur focus is on basketball,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s what we talk about and how we can get wins, and obviously we didn\u2019t do that tonight. So we need to find an area to improve in that way.\u201d When a reporter followed up by asking for Clark\u2019s personal reaction, she replied, \u201cI just answered.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some coverage characterized Clark\u2019s remarks as a defense of Cunningham, while other reactions accused her of avoiding a direct question. She maintained, however, that she would not change her view about eligibility rules in girls\u2019 and women\u2019s sports. \u201cI\u2019m also there to love biological women, and I think that there are rights that need to be protected,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ll never falter in my beliefs in that.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the Los Angeles Times<\/em><\/a>, Cunningham described her position as \u201ckind of common sense\u201d and later wrote, \u201cI said what I said,\u201d on Instagram.<\/p>\n

The Debate Followed the Fever to Minnesota<\/h2>\n

Supporters and critics of Cunningham\u2019s position gathered around Target Center before Indiana\u2019s game against Minnesota. The Associated Press reported<\/a> that it was the third consecutive Fever game to attract a demonstration connected to her comments.<\/p>\n

Some attendees wore shirts reading \u201cTrans kids belong in sports,\u201d while people outside the arena carried signs supporting Cunningham. She was also booed when she first touched the ball and at other points during the game. Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve wore a light blue shirt reading \u201cTrans kids belong\u201d beneath her jacket.<\/p>\n

Reeve and Cunningham spoke privately at midcourt before the game. Reeve later declined to disclose the complete conversation but said they discussed the responsibilities that accompany their public platforms. \u201cBoth of us understand that we have platforms, and we both talked about wanting to, more than anything, educate,\u201d Reeve said.<\/p>\n

Cunningham Says the Controversy Has Not Distracted the Team<\/h2>\n

Cunningham said before the Minnesota game that the demonstrations had not affected her ability to focus on basketball. \u201cI think everyone who knows me personally, they know that I\u2019m full of love,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m bubbly. I love the people around me. I love basketball. I love inspiring the next generation and doing that in a positive light.\u201d She added that the controversy did not cross her mind or the minds of her teammates while they were preparing to play.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
