{"id":353170,"date":"2026-08-04T18:02:10","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T23:02:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.etrafficlane.com\/60dollarmiracle\/trumps-arch-could-harm-integrity-of-many-washington-historical-sites-report-says"},"modified":"2026-08-04T18:02:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T23:02:13","slug":"trumps-arch-could-harm-integrity-of-many-washington-historical-sites-report-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.etrafficlane.com\/60dollarmiracle\/trumps-arch-could-harm-integrity-of-many-washington-historical-sites-report-says","title":{"rendered":"Trump&#8217;s arch may hurt integrity of many Washington historic websites, report says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"prism-article-body\">\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \"><span class=\"oyrPY qlwaB AGxeB \">WASHINGTON &#8212; <\/span>President Donald Trump&#8217;s proposed 250-foot-tall (76-meter) memorial arch could disrupt the historical significance of dozens of sites near its planned location, according to an assessment by the National Park Service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Many of Washington&#8217;s monuments, buildings and sites have been carefully planned over the decades to reflect significant moments in the nation&#8217;s history and evoke symbolism in being connected by sightline to other sites. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The proposed towering gilded arch, which last month received initial approval from <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-arch-capital-commission-review-e6da0a9e3ce59ea946ab653bd9853bf8\">a key federal commission<\/a>, would impact the \u201cintegrity\u201d of dozens of those historical properties because it would change \u201ccharacter-defining visual and spatial relationships\u201d between them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The NPS report, published Monday, said the immediate project area is located within the Memorial Avenue Corridor cultural landscape, \u201ca nationally significant historic designed landscape extending between the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., and Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">One of the most obvious elements the report cited is that the arch would break alignment between the Lincoln Memorial, Memorial Bridge and Arlington House that was formerly Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee\u2019s home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThe bridge alignment and associated ceremonial landscape were intended to physically and symbolically unite North and South through a coordinated monumental composition extending across the Potomac River,\u201d the report said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The report puts a snag in a project that has sailed through several steps of the approval process in front of planning bodies stocked with Trump appointees and allies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The proposed arch is one of several projects the Republican president is pursuing to leave <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-reflecting-pool-golf-course-washington-renovations-e708a36ef05a5a3f96d74e53d41c2109\">his lasting imprint on Washington<\/a>. With the potential to change the city\u2019s sightline, it has already sparked opposition, including through a lawsuit filed by a group of veterans and a historian.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The arch design, proposed by Trump, has already <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-arch-eisenhower-building-white-house-visitors-e4bd76b1d0dd3c597efb03f55c87390e\">received early approval<\/a> from the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. The commissioners were all appointed by Trump. The National Capital Area Planning Commission approved the site and preliminary plans at its July meeting. The commission is expected to take up the matter again at its September meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The arch is one of several projects Trump has proposed that is involved in litigation. The plaintiffs, three veterans and a historian, have challenged its construction saying it requires Congressional approval.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cOur claim is essentially that none of this has any authorization to be happening in the first place,\u201d said Nicolas Sansone, an attorney with Public Citizen Litigation Group representing the plaintiffs.
