It advertised rent of $800 per month, required a $400 deposit and promised immediate move-in.<\/p>\n<p>The couple sent both payments to the supposed landlord. The listing was fraudulent, leaving the family without the money and temporarily without a home.<\/p>\n<p>No arrest, criminal charge or recovery of the money had been announced.<\/p>\n<h2>The $800 Listing Appeared During an Urgent Housing Search<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Family loses over $1,000 in TikTok rental scam\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Pccz8E4BaCo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Jellesed and her boyfriend were looking for housing after moving their family from California when the TikTok offer appeared, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wqad.com\/article\/news\/local\/tiktok-rental-scam-costs-family-over-1000-in-east-moline\/526-acee488a-2493-442e-8bf0-b5310620e33e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WQAD<\/a>. Its promise of immediate availability appeared to provide a quick solution for a family that had already moved across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The advertised rent and deposit brought the total requested upfront to $1,200. The family sent the requested $1,200 believing that the payment had secured the property.<\/p>\n<p>They later discovered that the TikTok advertisement was fraudulent and that they did not have the promised rental.&nbsp;Jellesed\u2019s family was temporarily left without housing while attempting to find another property in an unfamiliar area.<\/p>\n<h2>Rental Scam Reports Reached Approximately $65 Million<\/h2>\n<p>Consumers reported nearly 65,000 rental scams and approximately $65 million in losses between January 2020 and June 2025, according to the FTC.<\/p>\n<p>The median reported loss was $1,000. Many of the scams originated through fake online advertisements, and young adults were especially likely to report losing money.<\/p>\n<p>Victims in Illinois can file reports with local police, <a href=\"https:\/\/reportfraud.ftc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ReportFraud.ftc.gov<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov\/File-A-Complaint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Illinois Attorney General\u2019s Consumer Protection Division<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Scammers Frequently Copy Real Property Photographs<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/data-visualizations\/data-spotlight\/2025\/12\/rental-scams-hit-home-65-million-reported-losses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Trade Commission<\/a> says rental scammers often copy photographs and descriptions from legitimate sale or rental listings, replace the real contact information and repost the property elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Other fake listings are created entirely from scratch using attractive photographs, below-market rent and claims that the home is ready immediately.
