Its brief statement did not say whether O\u2019Connor had permanently left Modest Mouse or explain the decision in greater detail.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement followed O\u2019Connor\u2019s public apology for sending a sexually explicit meme to a fan who said they were 16 at the time of the exchange.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Connor began performing with the band in 2021.<\/p>\n<h2>A Teen Fan Shared Screenshots of the Instagram Exchange<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none;overflow: hidden\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FSFChronicle%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0vFjBwBo9vfwxu5mGidFK7bXQgm7x7hjYRwMWgGoC9C6VJF329163r1MtsRUkZAikl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"628\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimon O\u2019Connor will not be joining us on the upcoming tour,\u201d Modest Mouse said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Dbgs3LcmZe0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">official Instagram statement<\/a>. \u201cThe good news is that Seth Jabour of Les Savy Fav will be jumping in to play guitar,\u201d the band continued. \u201cWe look forward to seeing you all out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The allegations originated with a Reddit user who identified themselves as 17 and said the Instagram interaction occurred when they were 16. The fan said their birth date was visible in their profile at the time. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/modest-mouse-replaces-guitarist-simon-oconnor-allegations-1236307608\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Billboard\u2019s account<\/a>, screenshots appeared to show O\u2019Connor opening the conversation with a sticker before sending a sexually explicit meme involving a nude man.<\/p>\n<p>The fan said O\u2019Connor subsequently viewed an Instagram story counting down to their 17th birthday and sent an apology. Another screenshot reportedly showed O\u2019Connor referring to a \u201cparty night\u201d and saying that he had been viewing things \u201cwith one eye.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He later wrote that the fan had surprised him with multiple likes and \u201cvery little intro besides bikini pics,\u201d adding that they were \u201cboth to blame.\u201d That message was later deleted, according to the screenshots.<\/p>\n<h2>O\u2019Connor Said He Mistook the Fan for an Online Troll<\/h2>\n<p>O\u2019Connor responded in the Modest Mouse subreddit, saying he believed the Instagram account belonged to someone who had previously used fake profiles to provoke or mislead him. He said his opening message and the explicit meme were intended as an attempted \u201cgotcha\u201d directed at the person he mistakenly believed was behind the account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter a few minutes, I realized that I had made a mistake and this was not the person who I had dealt with before,\u201d O\u2019Connor wrote in the <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/story\/modest-mouse-guitarist-simon-oconnor-apologizes-for-inappropriate-messages-to-minor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">apology reported by Pitchfork<\/a>. He said he unsent the messages and ended the conversation after recognizing his mistake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m genuinely sorry to the person who received those messages,\u201d O\u2019Connor continued. \u201cThey didn\u2019t deserve to be put in that position, and I\u2019m sorry for the stress and attention this has brought them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Connor acknowledged that some people would not accept his explanation but said he could only tell the truth, accept responsibility for his mistake and apologize.<\/p>\n<h2>The Tour Will Continue With Seth Jabour<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"LES SAVY FAV -  LIMO SCENE\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jksOV0hckyo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Modest Mouse has not announced any canceled performances connected to the lineup change. Jabour, a guitarist and founding member of the New York indie-rock band Les Savy Fav, is expected to perform during the approaching dates.<\/p>\n<p>His other work has included playing in the former <em>Late Night With Seth Meyers<\/em> house band.
