Sean Hannity<\/strong> thinks Bill Maher<\/strong> is talented, gifted, smart, and witty. He thinks Jon Stewart<\/strong> is funny and clever. He thinks Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, and Jimmy Fallon are none of those things.<\/p>\n

The Fox News host said all of this on a recent episode of his podcast Hang Out with Sean Hannity<\/em>, casually delivering what might be the most revealing media commentary to come out of conservative television this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Bill Maher is actually very talented. I do. I think he\u2019s gifted. I think he\u2019s talented. I think he\u2019s smart. I think he\u2019s witty,\u201d Hannity said. \u201cI don\u2019t agree with shit. I think he hates my guts, but I don\u2019t care. Him and Jon Stewart actually are funny. And I think they\u2019re clever. They make me laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then came the dismissal: \u201cKimmel and Colbert and Fallon don\u2019t do it for me. They\u2019re just not funny and creative.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Maher and Stewart Actually Do<\/h2>\n

Hannity didn\u2019t explain what separates the two he respects from the three he doesn\u2019t. He just said one group makes him laugh and the other doesn\u2019t. But their careers tell a story.<\/p>\n

Maher has spent years drawing fire from his own audience. He\u2019s criticized the left on free speech, Islam, and what he sees as ideological rigidity. When progressives asked why he goes after liberals so often, he once answered: \u201cBecause you\u2019re embarrassing me.\u201d His show Politically Incorrect<\/em> was cancelled by ABC in 2002 after he made controversial remarks about the 9\/11 attacks. Advertisers pulled out. Disney ended the show. Maher kept talking.<\/p>\n

Stewart has a similar track record. When he returned to The Daily Show<\/em>, his first monologue mocked President Biden\u2019s cognitive decline \u2014 and Democrats were furious. Mary Trump, Donald Trump\u2019s niece and one of her uncle\u2019s most vocal critics, called Stewart\u2019s rhetoric a \u2018potential disaster for democracy.\u2019 Months later, after the 2024 election, Stewart argued Democrats got \u2018shellacked\u2019 not because of \u2018woke\u2019 politics but because voters felt government wasn\u2019t working for them. In a separate segment, he told Democrats to stop complaining about norms and start exploiting loopholes the way Republicans do<\/p>\n

Kimmel, Colbert, and Fallon don\u2019t tend to generate those kinds of headlines. Their audiences largely agree with them before the monologue starts.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s Said This Before<\/h2>\n

This isn\u2019t new for Hannity. In 2014, after a week of trading public barbs with Stewart, Hannity said on his radio show that he found Stewart \u201cextremely talented and funny.\u201d When friends told him Stewart had taken him down on air, Hannity said it was \u201cpretty funny\u201d and he laughed.<\/p>\n

On the podcast, he also referenced defending Maher when Politically Incorrect<\/em> was cancelled. \u201cI remember it was people like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin that were saying don\u2019t fire Bill Maher,\u201d Hannity said. \u201cIt\u2019s not that we agreed with him, we just \u2014 first of all, I thought it was a great format, great show, great idea, but it was a precursor of what was to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was describing what would later be called cancel culture \u2014 and placing himself on the side of a liberal comedian, against his own audience\u2019s outrage, over two decades ago.<\/p>\n

Then He Drew a Line<\/h2>\n

Hannity has been one of the most partisan figures in American media for decades. He developed a close relationship with Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign and became so embedded in his orbit that White House aides reportedly called him the \u201cunofficial chief of staff.\u201d He joined Trump on stage at a campaign rally. During the Dominion Voting Systems lawsuit, he admitted under oath that he never believed Trump\u2019s false claims about the 2020 election \u2014 while his show gave airtime to those very claims.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the person who, in the same podcast segment, acknowledged there are people with platforms he finds \u201cevil,\u201d \u201cdark,\u201d and in some cases \u201cracist\u201d and \u201canti-Semitic.\u201d He said he wants nothing to do with them and they\u2019d never sit in his chair.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t name them. But the message was clear: some voices deserve protection even when you disagree with them. Others don\u2019t. Hannity didn\u2019t explain where that line falls. He just drew it.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
