{"id":349149,"date":"2026-04-03T05:08:29","date_gmt":"2026-04-03T10:08:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.etrafficlane.com\/60dollarmiracle\/georgia-lawmakers-end-annual-session-without-settling-conflict-on-voting-machines"},"modified":"2026-04-03T05:08:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T10:08:35","slug":"georgia-lawmakers-end-annual-session-without-settling-conflict-on-voting-machines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.etrafficlane.com\/60dollarmiracle\/georgia-lawmakers-end-annual-session-without-settling-conflict-on-voting-machines","title":{"rendered":"Georgia lawmakers finish annual session with out settling battle on voting machines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"prism-article-body\">\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \"><span class=\"oyrPY qlwaB AGxeB \">ATLANTA &#8212; <\/span>The Georgia General Assembly ended its annual session early Friday without <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/georgia-trump-voting-machines-dominion-code-e76bb73312bb8682d8564acfe8600670\">a plan for new equipment<\/a> to overhaul the state&#8217;s voting system by a July deadline, plunging into doubt the future of elections in the political battleground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The lawmakers&#8217; failure to offer a solution after months of debate raises uncertainty about how Georgians will vote in November and leaves confusion that could end in the courts or a special legislative session.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThey\u2019ve abdicated their responsibility,\u201d Democratic state Rep. Saira Draper said of inaction by Republicans who control the legislature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Currently, voters make their choices on Dominion Voting machines, which then print ballots with a QR code that scanners read to tally votes. Those machines have been repeatedly targeted by President Donald Trump following his 2020 election loss, and Trump\u2019s Georgia supporters responded by <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/qr-codes-ballots-georgia-gop-9cef0395be049a446ce170cd1c05d586\">enacting a law<\/a> in 2024 that bans using barcodes to count votes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">But state law still requires counties to use the machines. No money has been allocated to reprogram them, and lawmakers failed to agree on a replacement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cWe\u2019ll have an unresolvable statutory conflict come July 1,\u201d said House Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Victor Anderson, a Cornelia Republican who backed a proposal to keep using the machines in 2026 that Senate Republicans declined to consider.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">House Republicans and Democrats backed Anderson&#8217;s plan, which would have required that Georgia choose a voting process that didn&#8217;t use QR codes by 2028. Election officials preferred that solution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThe Senate has shown that they\u2019re not responsible actors,\u201d Draper said. She added that Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, a Trump-endorsed Republican running for governor, seemed more interested in keeping Trump&#8217;s backing than \u201cdoing right by Georgia voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">A spokesperson for Jones didn&#8217;t immediately respond to a request for comment early Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Joseph Kirk, Bartow County election supervisor and president of the Georgia Association of Voter Registration and Election Officials, said he\u2019ll look to the secretary of state for guidance and assumes a judge will rule to instruct election officials how to proceed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThis is uncharted territory,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Robert Sinners, a spokesperson for Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who is also running for governor, said officials are \u201cready to follow the law and follow the Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Republican House Speaker Jon Burns told reporters that his chamber was seeking to minimize changes this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cYou can\u2019t change horses in the middle of the stream,\u201d Burns said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Burns said he would meet with Gov. Brian Kemp and \u201ctake his temperature&#8221; on the possibility of a special session. A spokesperson for Kemp didn&#8217;t answer questions about what the outgoing Republican governor would do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Anderson said without action, the state could be required to use hand-marked and hand-counted paper ballots in November. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Election officials say switching to a new system within just a few months, as advocated by some Republicans, would be nearly impossible. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThey made no way for this to happen except putting a deadline on it,&#8221; Cherokee County elections director Anne Dover said of the switch away from barcodes.
