Vince Vaughn<\/strong> sat across from Theo Von<\/strong> on Tuesday and did something unusual for a working actor with a movie to promote. He told the truth about the industry\u2019s most protected format.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt stopped being funny, and it started feeling like I was in a f\u2014ing class I didn\u2019t want to take,\u201d Vaughn said on Von\u2019s This Past Weekend<\/em> podcast. \u201cI\u2019m getting scolded.\u201d<\/p>\n

He called the shows \u201cagenda-based.\u201d He said every host became the same host. He compared the experience of watching late-night to being trapped next to someone on a plane you can\u2019t escape. Von \u2014 whose podcast is the fourth-biggest on Spotify globally \u2014 added that late-night hosts narrowed their targets until the only people left to mock were \u201cwhite redneck kind of people,\u201d and that ratings tanked accordingly.<\/p>\n

The question isn\u2019t whether Vaughn has a point. The question is whether he has the whole picture.<\/p>\n

What the Numbers Say<\/h2>\n

The decline is not subtle. Every major late-night host has lost the majority of their audience since 2015 \u2014 Kimmel, Colbert, and Meyers each saw viewership collapse by roughly 70 to 80 percent. Fallon\u2019s Tonight Show<\/em> \u2014 once the franchise that defined NBC \u2014 shed 51 percent of its viewers in six years. Combined 18-49 viewership across all of late-night dropped 17 percent in a single year. Colbert\u2019s show reportedly bled between $40 and $50 million in 2024 alone.<\/p>\n

Then the dominoes started falling. CBS cancelled Colbert last July and went a step further \u2014 it retired the Late Show<\/em> name entirely, ending a franchise that had been on the air since David Letterman arrived in 1993. The finale airs May 21. Critics called it political censorship. Colbert himself called a Paramount settlement with Trump \u201ca big fat bribe\u201d days before the announcement. But a show hemorrhaging $40 to $50 million a year doesn\u2019t need a political explanation to get cancelled. Sometimes the math is the story.<\/p>\n

What Vaughn Gets Right \u2014 and What He Skips<\/h2>\n

Vaughn\u2019s explanation is clean: the shows got preachy, audiences left, end of story. \u201cThey always blame technology,\u201d he said. \u201cBut the reality is the approach.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a satisfying diagnosis. It\u2019s also incomplete.<\/p>\n

Late-night airs at 11:35 PM on linear broadcast TV \u2014 a medium that has been losing viewers across every format for a decade. A 23-year-old isn\u2019t choosing between Kimmel and Theo Von. They\u2019re not watching broadcast television at all. Meanwhile, 584 million people worldwide now listen to podcasts. In the U.S., 55 percent of the population tunes in monthly \u2014 the first time that number has ever crossed the majority line.<\/p>\n

But here\u2019s where Vaughn\u2019s argument earns itself back. Late-night did<\/em> go digital. Kimmel, Fallon, and Colbert all post clips to YouTube, pulling millions of views. They live on the same platforms as podcasts. And they\u2019re still losing to shows with no writers\u2019 room, no set, and no budget. As one CBS insider told The Wrap last year: \u201cYouTube is digital dimes versus network dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n

So the delivery system is dying, yes. But the shows that adapted to the new one are still getting outrun by two guys in a room with microphones. That part can\u2019t be explained by cord-cutting alone.<\/p>\n

Vaughn hasn\u2019t appeared on Kimmel\u2019s show since 2015. He\u2019s never been on Colbert\u2019s. He visited Trump at the White House last April. He calls himself a libertarian. The Daily Beast called him MAGA.<\/p>\n

None of that makes him wrong. But he\u2019s not a neutral bystander watching the building burn from across the street. He\u2019s someone who walked out of the building years ago and is now explaining the fire.<\/p>\n

The building is burning, though. Colbert\u2019s show ends in two months. Kimmel has hinted at retirement. NBC already cut Meyers\u2019 band and trimmed Fallon\u2019s schedule.<\/p>\n

And Vaughn delivered his eulogy for late-night on a podcast with no network, no time slot, and no teleprompter \u2014 to an audience that keeps growing while the rooms he\u2019s describing keep emptying.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
