2020 was a bad year for movies. Blockbusters built for the theatrical experience were immediately streamed, and people found comfort in the familiar titles. Five years later, the science fiction movies we see on the silver screen have become weirder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As we\u2019ve grown comfortable with the idea of AI and robotics becoming a regular part of our lives, more movies are depicting apocalypses (remember the sequels to <\/span>A Quiet Place<\/span><\/i>?), and new stories are being told every day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, everything isn\u2019t great on the production side of things. 2023 saw the longest strike from SAG-AFTRA and the second-longest one from the Writers\u2019 Guild. This came around at a time when Disney\u2019s favorite money maker, the MCU, took repeated beatings at the box office. But <\/span>Everything Everywhere All at Once <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Godzilla: Minus One <\/span><\/i>worked on shoestring budgets while churning out large profits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2020-2025 timeline has been an interesting period. However, we need to examine the major stories, and we\u2019ll begin by discussing the strike and its impact on the movies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

SAG-AFTRA and the Writers\u2019 Guild go on Strike<\/span><\/h2>\n

In 2023, the actors\u2019 and writers\u2019 guilds of America went on strike. It was a long time coming. Social media lit up with writers and actors talking about how streaming services had cut them out of the profit chain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As creatives firmly put out their demands, studios bled. Films like <\/span>Captain America: Brave New World <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Godzilla x Kong <\/span><\/i>were postponed and later released, and some movies were postponed indefinitely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With AI being one of the key reasons for the strike (writers and actors were anxious about being replaced by rapidly developing AI), it\u2019s not surprising that the past two years have seen a rising number of movies dealing with the subject.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, smaller projects from outside Hollywood had their time to shine and made their mark. Independent films won awards, and the tentpole blockbusters had to take a breather. This meant a series of refreshing stories coming onto the screen.<\/span><\/p>\n
