This came around at a time when Disney\u2019s favorite money maker, the MCU, took repeated beatings at the box office. But <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything Everywhere All at Once <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Godzilla: Minus One <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worked on shoestring budgets while churning out large profits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2020-2025 timeline has been an interesting period. It was a long time coming. Films like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Captain America: Brave New World <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Godzilla x Kong <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were postponed and later released, and some movies were postponed indefinitely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With AI being one of the key reasons for the strike (writers and actors were anxious about being replaced by rapidly developing AI), it\u2019s not surprising that the past two years have seen a rising number of movies dealing with the subject.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, smaller projects from outside Hollywood had their time to shine and made their mark. Independent films won awards, and the tentpole blockbusters had to take a breather. Marvel and Disney suffered back-to-back losses with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elementals <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ant-Man: QuantumMania <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being flops. Even more popular brands started to feel less like \u201cevents\u201d and more like homework. Another multiverse, another color-graded sky beam, another quippy genius saving a world that looked suspiciously like a green screen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It makes sense that the most interesting multiverse film of the past half-decade was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything Everywhere All at Once<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a movie that was both original and audacious in its premise.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japan also had its chance to shine with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shin Ultraman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shin Kamen Rider, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Godzilla: Minus One, all of which turned<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out to be global hits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After Yang <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was a poignant film about grief, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vesper <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was a realistic and beautiful depiction of a world after climate collapse.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you spent the last five years waiting for the next superhero and science fiction blockbuster, you definitely missed out on some great films.
