That\u2019s fewer than the 215,000 new filings analysts surveyed by the data firm FactSet were expecting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Filings for unemployment benefits are viewed as a proxy for U.S. layoffs and are close to a real-time indicator of the health of the job market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">While weekly layoffs have remained in a healthy range mostly between 200,000 and 250,000 for the past few years, a number of high-profile companies have announced job cuts recently, including <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/morgan-stanley-layoffs-investment-banking-47625e9c2ec04b4e401725a75f99d0e7\">Morgan Stanley,<\/a><a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/block-dorsey-layoffs-ai-jobs-18e00a0b278977b0a87893f55e3db7bb\">Block<\/a>, <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ups-amazon-workforce-job-cuts-57b40623628ebe741a9bfb16161fff30\">UPS<\/a><a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/amazon-layoffs-job-cuts-tech-74387fae2313ff7b0b1e638c00863443\">and Amazon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Earlier this month, the Labor Department reported that U.S. employers unexpectedly <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jobs-unemployment-economy-inflation-trump-tariffs-075a0d33e0794b7c93b9b8a7302dab98\">cut 92,000 jobs in February<\/a>, a sign that the labor market remains <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/amazon-ups-layoffs-economy-washington-71bfde72b358fddb9a22c15aa13fe848\">under strain<\/a>. Revisions also slashed 69,000 jobs from December and January payrolls, nudging the unemployment rate up to 4.4%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The surprisingly weak employment picture in February adds to the economic uncertainty over the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-israel-us-march-6-2026-6108249f19c4bc162eacd7847976c174\">war with Iran<\/a>, which has caused oil prices to surge more than 40% and saddled business and consumers with higher costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">This comes at a time when inflation was already relatively high in the U.S. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Last week, the Commerce Department reported that the Fed\u2019s preferred inflation gauge, personal consumption expenditures or PCE, rose 2.8% in January compared with a year earlier. That\u2019s above the Fed\u2019s 2% target and the latest sign that prices were <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/inflation-gas-oil-trump-7303e4593d62c2dee899489571cb0548\">persistently elevated<\/a> even before the Iran war caused <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-war-oil-prices-gasoline-economy-consumers-a5b47c09f83406adf2a00616382003f6\">spikes in oil and gas costs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">That persistent inflation, combined with the uncertainties brought on by the conflict in the Middle East, led the Fed to leave its benchmark lending rate alone on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThe thing I really want to emphasize is, nobody knows,\u201d Powell said, referring to the impact of the Iran war. \u201cThe economic effects could be bigger, they could be smaller, they could be much smaller, they could be much bigger. We just don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Powell said the central bank would need to see further progress in the price of goods declining as the impact of tariffs fades before cutting rates further.
