Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas all have enacted similar laws requiring the Ten Commandments be displayed in classrooms. And as such, each mandate has faced legal challenges that many expect to eventually be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Here is a closer look at the status of the mandates, which have stirred the long-running debate over the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/america-christian-united-states-conservative-beliefs-9286431a0ddde91c928e5d411795c1fe\">role of religion<\/a> in government institutions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Last year, seven Arkansas families of various religious and nonreligious backgrounds <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ten-commandments-arkansas-lawsuit-classrooms-aclu-5a4ee9833f169e92d1ffbee448196598\">filed a lawsuit<\/a> challenging the state&#8217;s new law requiring all public elementary and secondary schools to display the Ten Commandments in every classroom and library. The lawsuit named six school districts in Arkansas as defendants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">While it is unclear how many school districts or publicly-funded universities have hung up posters, local media outlets have cited multiple examples over the past five months. That includes the Ten Commandments being posted at the University of Arkansas on the Fayetteville campus, the Arkansas Advocate <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/arkansasadvocate.com\/2025\/10\/27\/ten-commandments-displays-prompt-scholarship-cancellations-teach-in-at-university-of-arkansas\/\">reported<\/a> in October. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Critics argue that the mandate is unconstitutional and violates separation of church and state. Proponents of the legislation say the Ten Commandments have historical significance and are part of the foundation of U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">On Monday, U.S. District Court Judge Timothy L. Brooks said in his written judgment that \u201cnothing could possibly justify hanging the Ten Commandments\u2014with or without historical context \u2014 in a calculus, chemistry, French, or woodworking class, to name a few.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Brooks, who was <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/the-press-office\/2013\/06\/07\/president-obama-nominates-two-serve-district-court-judges\">nominated<\/a> by former President Barack Obama, went on to write that there is \u201cno need to strain our minds to imagine a constitutional display mandated\u201d by the 2025 law; \u201cOne doesn\u2019t exist,\u201d he wrote. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">While Brooks\u2019 judgment blocks the requirement, it\u2019s unclear how broadly his decision can be applied \u2014 if it is limited to the specific school districts named in the lawsuit or if it applies to the entire state. Megan Bailey a spokesperson for the American Civil Liberties Union of Arkansas, one of the groups representing the parents challenging the law, said the ruling \u201cmakes clear the law is unconstitutional.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cGiven that, it would be unwise for any school district in Arkansas to move forward with posting the Ten Commandments,\u201d Bailey told The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement that she plans to appeal the ruling and \u201cdefend our state&#8217;s values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">In 2024, Louisiana became the <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ten-commandments-louisiana-schools-religion-99b86fff51932374993c45ab3f0555c9\">first state<\/a> to mandate poster-sized displays of the Ten Commandments in every public school classroom, from kindergarten through college.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">While the challenge has wound its way through federal courts for nearly two years, a ruling last month vacated an earlier court order that had prevented the law from taking effect \u2014 clearing the way for displays to be installed in classrooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Immediately following <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ten-commandments-law-louisiana-court-ruling-b7f8f93c4f05426fe73b29225f0a27cf\">the Feb. 20 ruling<\/a> from the full 5th U.S. Circuit of Appeals, Gov. Jeff Landry instructed schools to follow the law and post the Ten Commandments. In a letter to educators, Landry wrote that the court&#8217;s decision \u201cremoves any obstacles to the implementation of Louisiana\u2019s Ten Commandments law\u201d and that schools &#8220;should now proceed with placing the posters in classrooms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The law requires schools to accept donated Ten Commandments posters, which must have \u201clarge, easily readable font.\u201d Earlier this year, a conservative advocacy group, Louisiana Family Forum, sent posters to most of the state\u2019s parish school systems, The New Orleans Advocate\/The Times-Picayune <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/news\/education\/louisiana-schools-ten-commandments-posters-donated\/article_0d626650-ae3c-4b4d-8bde-b1da0965b730.html\">reported.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">There have not yet been widespread reports of schools hanging up the posters, with some school officials expressing worries about potential litigation. However, others say it is imminent. Among them is Louisiana State University President Wade Rousse, who said the university intends to comply with the law but, as of last week, has not received donated posters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Last year, a similar mandate in <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ten-commandments-texas-schools-f16713552035212c4c5430e988dfcf82\">Texas took effect<\/a> \u2014 marking the widest-reaching attempt in the nation to hang the Ten Commandments in public schools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">With no shortage of strong opinions among teachers, parents, and students, the posters began going up in classrooms as school districts accepted donations or paid to have them printed.
