Amid rising gas prices and uncertainly at home about the cost and duration of this war with Iran, President Donald Trump is caught between assuring Americans the war will be over soon and warning Iranians that he can fight as long as it takes.<\/p>\n

“We’ve won,” the president declared to a crowd of supporters in Kentucky on Wednesday. “Let me tell you, we’ve won.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

But on Friday morning his message to Iran was that the U.S. has “unparalleled firepower, unlimited ammunition, and plenty of time.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

“War is hell,” his defense secretary told reporters hours later.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, it’s only “a little excursion,” Trump\u00a0has said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For Americans, an “excursion” typically conjures up thoughts of a\u00a0daylong\u00a0adventure or maybe an overly ambitious hike up\u00a0a\u00a0mountain.<\/p>\n

In this case, Trump is referring to a war in\u00a0Iran that has so far killed 13 American service members\u00a0and wounded at least 140.<\/p>\n

According to an ABC analysis,\u00a0online search volume for the word \u201cexcursion\u201d spiked to about 20,000. People were also searching for the word\u00a0“incursion,”\u00a0perhaps thinking that’s what Trump meant to say.<\/p>\n

But Trump was clear. And a reporter pressed him:<\/p>\n

Which is it, a war or an excursion?<\/p>\n

“Well, it’s both. It’s both,” he replied. “It’s an excursion that will keep us out of a war, and the war is going to be, uh — I mean, for them it’s a war. For us, it’s turned out to be easier than we thought.”<\/p>\n

However he chooses to brand it, so far it’s proving unpopular at home.<\/p>\n

An\u00a0Ipsos poll<\/a>\u00a0released on Tuesday found only 29% of Americans approve of the strikes on Iran, and 64% say that Trump has not explained the objectives of the war clearly.<\/p>\n

The White House blames that lack of clarity on the news media. On Thursday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt accused outlets of “pushing a fake narrative” of “mixed messaging”\u00a0from the administration.<\/p>\n

She said Trump has clearly outlined the mission: that the U.S. “destroy” Iran’s missile capabilities, “annihilate” its navy, weaken or eliminate proxy forces and make sure the regime can never get a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n

Yes, the president has said he wants to do all of those things and so have others in the administration at various points.<\/p>\n

But the message\u00a0hasn’t been consistent<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

When he announced the strikes almost two weeks ago, President Trump called on the Iranian people to lead an uprising and topple the regime.<\/p>\n

The next day, his secretary of defense said the war is not about regime change.<\/p>\n

Trump’s said the war is “won,” but that there is more to do. He’s said, “I could call it, or we could\u00a0further and we’re going to go further.”<\/p>\n

There’s no question that some stated objectives are being accomplished. On Thursday, U.S. Central Command said some\u00a015,000\u00a0targets have been struck, including 90 Iranian ships.<\/p>\n

What’s not clear is when it will be safe to “call it.”<\/p>\n

Can the U.S. walk away with the regime battered but intact — and can it walk away if Iran still has the means to make a nuclear bomb?<\/p>\n

Leaving before those things are accomplished will be more than an excursion.<\/p>\n

“As we end this threat to America and this threat to the world,\u00a0we don’t want to leave early, do we?” he said Wednesday, adding,”We gotta finish the job, right?”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
