Days ahead of President Donald Trump\u2019s State of the Union address to Congress and a little more than two weeks before the first primary voters head to the polls, majorities of Americans disapprove of how the president is handling inflation, tariffs, relations with other countries, immigration and the economy, according to an ABC News\/Washington Post\/Ipsos poll conducted via Ipsos\u2019 KnowledgePanel<\/a> poll conducted shortly before the Supreme Court invalidated Trump\u2019s global tariffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n And despite Trump’s\u00a0low ratings, Americans\u00a0don’t\u00a0trust Democrats in Congress more to handle the country’s biggest problems.<\/p>\n President Donald Trump speaks during a press conference in the Brady Press Briefing Room of the White House in Washington, February 20, 2026.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Aaron Schwartz\/Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n About two-thirds\u00a0of Americans\u00a0disapprove of how Trump is handling inflation (65%) while over 6 in 10 disapprove of how he is handling tariffs on imported goods (64%) and U.S. relations with other countries (62%).\u00a0Nearly as\u00a0many disapprove of how he is handling immigration (58%) and the economy (57%).\u00a0The poll was conducted\u00a0Feb. 12-17; the\u00a0Supreme Court\u2019s decision on tariffs came out\u00a0Feb. 20.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n Trump\u2019s\u00a0highest\u00a0approval rating\u00a0is\u00a0at best slightly negative: The immigration situation at the U.S.-Mexico border, where 50% of Americans disapprove of how he is handling things and 47% approve.\u00a0<\/p>\n While majorities of Democrats and independents disapprove of Trump on all six issues measured,\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a split among Republicans.\u00a0Over half of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents,\u00a054%,\u00a0say they are supporters of the\u00a0MAGA movement\u00a0and 42% say they are not.\u00a0Majorities of MAGA Republicans approve of how Trump is handling all six issues measured, but among non-MAGA Republicans, majorities disapprove of how\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0handling inflation,\u00a0tariffs\u00a0and relations with other countries. A majority of non-MAGA Republicans approve of how\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0handing the border,\u00a0economy\u00a0and immigration.<\/p>\n Trump\u2019s\u00a0overall\u00a0disapproval rating\u00a0is at\u00a060%, marking the highest numerical disapproval of\u00a0his second term and matching\u00a0his\u00a0disapproval rating\u00a0as he left office after his first term in January 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n Do Americans like Democrats any better?<\/strong><\/p>\n But even with all of that, Americans do not trust the Democratic Party any more than Trump.<\/p>\n Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer joined by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and House Homeland Security Chairman Bennie Thompson, speaks at a press conference on Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding at the Capitol, Feb. 4, 2026.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Kevin Dietsch\/Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n Americans are roughly split on who they trust more to handle the country\u2019s main problems: 33% say Trump and 31% say Democrats — and another 31% say neither. Last year, they trusted Trump over Democrats by a 7-point margin.<\/p>\n They are also roughly split on trusting Trump or Democrats on reducing the cost of living in the U.S., but prefer Trump to handle immigration by 4 percentage points.<\/p>\n And while 64% of Americans say Trump is out of touch with the concerns of most people in the country today, that matches the share who say the same about the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n The economy<\/strong><\/p>\n While Americans are still quite negative on the economy, those feelings have tempered, but only slightly.\u00a0<\/p>\n Nearly half\u00a0of Americans say the economy has gotten worse since Trump became president (48%), which is down from 52% who said the same in October. The share saying the economy has gotten better ticked up only slightly over the same period, from 27% to 29%.\u00a0<\/p>\n And just 22% say they are better off financially now than when Trump became president in 2025, up from 18% in October. That rating is higher than Biden enjoyed throughout his presidency on the same measure. Still,\u00a0a majority of\u00a0Americans say their financial situation is either \u201cabout the same\u201d (44%) or \u201cnot as well off\u201d (33%).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n As mentioned, 65% of Americans disapprove of how Trump is handling inflation, 64% disapprove of how he is handling tariffs and 57% disapprove of how he is handling the economy overall.\u00a0<\/p>\n Trump\u2019s honesty, mental and physical health<\/strong><\/p>\n Moreover,\u00a0more\u00a0than\u00a0half of Americans, 56%, say Trump lacks the mental sharpness it takes to serve effectively as president, the highest in ABC News-Washington Post-Ipsos polling since 2020 — when it was 52%.<\/p>\n When President Joe Biden was in office, 54% said he lacked the mental sharpness to be president, rising to 69% by January 2024 in ABC-Post-Ipsos polling.<\/p>\n About half (51%) say Trump is not in good enough\u00a0physical\u00a0health to serve effectively as president\u00a0either — also a high in ABC-Post-Ipsos polling dating to 2023\u00a0and a stark difference from the 28% who said this\u00a0less than three years\u00a0ago<\/a>. Biden never got close to that level during his presidency, peaking at 55% saying he was not honest in January 2024. Today, majorities of Democrats (96%), independents (80%) and non-MAGA Republicans (74%) say Trump is not honest and trustworthy, while more than 8 in 10 MAGA Republicans say Trump is honest and trustworthy.\u00a0<\/p>\n Americans are\u00a0roughly split\u00a0over whether\u00a0Trump is a strong leader\u00a0(48%) or not (51%).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n A growing majority\u00a0of Americans\u00a0say that Trump is using the presidency to enrich himself,\u00a062%,\u00a0up from 56% last September.\u00a0Just over a third of Americans say the president is not using his post to enrich himself.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Majorities of Democrats (95%) and independents (69%) say Trump is using the presidency to enrich himself, along with about half of non-MAGA Republicans (51%). Most MAGA Republicans (86%) say Trump is not using the presidency to enrich himself.\u00a0<\/p>\n About two-thirds of Americans\u00a0(65%)\u00a0say Trump has gone beyond his authority as president, the highest share since ABC-Post-Ipsos\u00a0first asked last February and it was 57%.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n And over half (56%) of Americans say the Trump administration is not committed to protecting Americans\u2019 rights and freedoms, while 43% say it is;\u00a0nearly identical\u00a0to the shares who said the same in April of last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n Majorities oppose Trump using military to force changes in other countries, cutting the number of recommended vaccines<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n On two issues, Americans oppose the Trump administration by a more than 2-to-1 margin, with large shares saying they have no opinion.\u00a0<\/p>\n The Centers for Disease Control\u00a0and Prevention\u00a0under Trump has\u00a0cut the number of vaccines recommended for children<\/a>. This change was enacted by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Majorities of Democrats and independents oppose this.\u00a0<\/p>\n And as revelations from the files from the investigation of disgraced, convicted\u00a0sex offender Jeffrey Epstein continue to roll out, most Americans (56%) say the Trump administration has not been transparent in their release while just 26% say they have been transparent.\u00a0<\/p>\n While 69% of MAGA Republicans say the Trump administration has been transparent in its release of the Epstein files, just 32% of non-MAGA Republicans agree.
