\u201cKids, you don\u2019t know what the f*** it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how Bill Maher<\/strong> <\/a>opened his latest take on Western civilization during Friday night\u2019s episode of Real Time<\/em> \u2014 and by \u201ckids,\u201d he meant two of the biggest pop stars on the planet.<\/p>\n

The HBO host singled out Billie Eilish<\/strong><\/a> and Chappell Roan<\/strong><\/a> by name, accusing them of reducing everything about the West to a story of oppression while benefiting from the very freedoms it created. It was the kind of segment that splits the internet clean in half \u2014 and within hours, it was already doing exactly that.<\/p>\n

\u2018Don\u2019t Ask Billie Eilish or Chappell Roan\u2019<\/h2>\n

Maher didn\u2019t ease into it. He told his audience that young people \u201cthink Western means white and white means bad,\u201d then argued that atrocities aren\u2019t unique to European history, pointing to Imperial Japan and Genghis Khan.<\/p>\n

He then turned his attention directly to the two Grammy-winning artists. \u201cDon\u2019t ask Billie Eilish or Chappell Roan about what the Western values are, because they\u2019ll just say it\u2019s about oppression,\u201d Maher said. \u201cBut it\u2019s not about oppression.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, he listed what he believes the West actually stands for: \u201cRule of law. Respect for minorities. Democracy. Scientific inquiry.\u201d He called them \u201cgood things that came from the Western world\u201d and added, \u201cI wish that schools would teach that again.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comments built on Maher\u2019s earlier attack on Eilish\u2019s viral Grammy speech, where the 24-year-old declared \u201cno one is illegal on stolen land\u201d while accepting Song of the Year. At the time, he told her she \u201cdidn\u2019t go to school\u201d and \u201cdoesn\u2019t know facts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Friday made it clear he wasn\u2019t done.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s where the story gets more complicated \u2014 and more interesting.<\/p>\n

While Maher was framing Roan as someone who reduces the West to oppression, Roan was making headlines for something else entirely. Earlier this month, she became the most prominent artist to leave the Wasserman talent agency after its founder Casey Wasserman was named in the latest batch of Jeffrey Epstein files.<\/p>\n

Roan didn\u2019t stay quiet about it. She said she refused to \u201cpassively stand by\u201d and that \u201cno artist, agent or employee should ever be expected to defend or overlook actions that conflict so deeply with our own moral values.\u201d Her exit triggered an industry-wide exodus \u2014 Laufey, Weyes Blood, Orville Peck, and others followed \u2014 and may have contributed to Wasserman announcing he\u2019s selling the agency.<\/p>\n

In other words, the young woman Maher says doesn\u2019t understand values was busy holding a powerful industry figure accountable while much of Hollywood stayed silent.<\/p>\n

As for Eilish, the singer Maher says \u201cdidn\u2019t go to school\u201d has directed $11.5 million in proceeds from her Hit Me Hard and Soft tour toward climate and hunger relief \u2014 and picked up an Environmental Justice Award at the annual MLK Jr. Beloved Community ceremony in Atlanta earlier this year.<\/p>\n

None of this came up on Friday night.<\/p>\n
