A majority of\u00a0Americans disapprove of how President Donald Trump\u00a0is handling\u00a0tariffs on imported goods, according to\u00a0an\u00a0ABC News\/Washington Post\/Ipsos poll conducted via Ipsos\u2019 KnowledgePanel<\/a> shortly before the Supreme Court invalidated Trump\u2019s global tariffs.<\/p>\n The poll was conducted\u00a0Feb. 12-17. The Supreme Court\u2019s decision<\/a> came out\u00a0Feb. 20.<\/p>\n Majorities of\u00a0Americans with various income backgrounds,\u00a0men,\u00a0women\u00a0and Americans of all age groups disapprove of how Trump\u00a0is handling\u00a0tariffs, along with majorities of white, Black, Hispanic and Asian Americans, according to the poll.<\/p>\n A majority of those who did not vote in 2024 disapprove of how Trump\u00a0is handling\u00a0tariffs\u00a0along with\u00a0almost all\u00a0of those who voted for former Vice President Kamala Harris. Over 9 in 10 Americans who disapprove of Trump oppose how he\u00a0is handling\u00a0tariffs.<\/p>\n While most Republicans approve of how Trump\u00a0is handling\u00a0tariffs (75%), that drops to 43% among self-described non-MAGA Republicans (which include independents who lean Republican and call themselves MAGA supporters). A 55% majority of non-MAGA Republicans disapprove of how Trump\u00a0is handling\u00a0tariffs. Most MAGA Republicans (87%) approve of how he\u00a0is handling\u00a0tariffs on imported goods.<\/p>\n In all, 54% of Republicans and Republican-\u00a0leaning independents say they are supporters of the MAGA movement and 42% say they are not.<\/p>\n While majorities of those with college degrees and without disapprove of how Trump is handling tariffs, white\u00a0people without college degrees are split. White people with college degrees disapprove by a more-than 2-to-1 margin.<\/p>\n Rural Americans are also split over whether they approve or disapprove of how Trump\u00a0is handling\u00a0tariffs, while most suburban and urban people disapprove.<\/p>\n Opinions on tariffs have\u00a0remained\u00a0stable since ABC\/Post\/Ipsos first asked in April last year; the same\u00a0share approved and disapproved of how Trump was handling the issue then as they do now.<\/p>\n Methodology\u00a0<\/strong>—\u00a0This ABC News-Washington Post-Ipsos poll was conducted via the probability-based Ipsos\u00a0KnowledgePanel, Feb. 12-17, 2026, among 2,589 U.S. adults and has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
