The Invite<\/em> earned a standing ovation that left Wilde tearing up. I Want Your Sex<\/em> is dragging Gen Z\u2019s relationship with sex on screen into the comment section.<\/p>\n

Sundance loves a \u201cmain character\u201d weekend. Someone the festival can hand a microphone, a spotlight, and a debate that spreads faster than anyone\u2019s actual film distribution deal.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s version is Olivia Wilde, because she showed up with two different kinds of heat at once.<\/p>\n

While the internet was still chewing on the marketing gravity of I Want Your Sex<\/em><\/a>, Wilde was also getting the kind of reception you can\u2019t screenshot: a standing ovation for The Invite<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The Standing Ovation Lane<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Wilde\u2019s The Invite<\/em> premiered at Sundance on Jan. 24, and PEOPLE reported the audience response<\/a> was strong enough to leave her wiping away tears onstage.<\/p>\n

The setup is intimate and brutal. The film stays with two couples at a dinner party. Wilde and Seth Rogen host, Pen\u00e9lope Cruz and Edward Norton play the visiting couple, and the night turns into a slow excavation of grievances, insecurities, and relationship bargaining that nobody wants to say out loud.<\/p>\n

In the post-screening Q&A, Wilde framed the emotional whiplash as the point. She talked about laughter making people vulnerable, then the story \u201cgut-punching\u201d them.<\/p>\n

This is the version of the Wilde narrative that plays best here. A \u201ccomeback\u201d premiere. A room full of critics. A crowd reaction that reads like validation, especially after the Don\u2019t Worry Darling<\/em> years of noise.<\/p>\n

The Discourse Lane. Same Person, Different Movie<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Now flip the channel.<\/p>\n

Wilde is also starring in Gregg Araki\u2019s I Want Your Sex<\/em>. It premiered the night before at Park City\u2019s Eccles Theatre, and the vibe swing is the point.<\/p>\n

Araki described the film as the story of a young college grad who lands a job assisting a controversial art provocateur named Erika Tracy, played by Wilde. Cooper Hoffman plays him. The relationship upends his life. Araki called the ride \u201cfun,\u201d \u201ccolorful,\u201d and \u201csexy.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Araki also explained how the project evolved post-#MeToo. He didn\u2019t want a story where a woman gets dragged into a patriarchal dynamic, even if \u201cconsensual,\u201d so he flipped the gender roles.<\/p>\n

Then he stapled the movie to the most reliable gasoline in 2026: Gen Z panic. He said he\u2019d been absorbing stories about Gen Z not having sex or relationships, and that became a major theme.<\/p>\n

Chase Sui Wonders, who plays Hoffman\u2019s roommate, delivered the quote that did exactly what Sundance quotes are supposed to do. She said she doesn\u2019t \u201clove to see sex on screen,\u201d<\/a> called herself \u201ca bit of a prude,\u201d and described that as \u201cdecisively Gen Z.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the movie\u2019s second marketing engine. The first was the title. The second is the argument.<\/p>\n

Why the Two-Lane Weekend Works<\/strong><\/h2>\n

This is why Wilde is the perfect Sundance \u201cmain character\u201d right now.<\/p>\n

The Invite<\/em> is the prestige lane. A contained cast. A marriage in crisis. A festival-friendly chamber dramedy that lets critics praise craft and calibration.<\/p>\n

I Want Your Sex<\/em> is the chaos lane. A provocation that invites thinkpieces about whether people are prudes, whether intimacy is exploitation, and whether \u201csex positive\u201d art is even allowed to be unserious anymore.<\/p>\n

The real win for Wilde is that she gets to occupy both lanes without having to pick one. She can be the person receiving a standing ovation for a marital comedy and the person at the center of the internet\u2019s ongoing argument about sex on screen.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not a contradiction. That\u2019s range. It\u2019s also strategy, even when it\u2019s accidental.<\/p>\n

Because Sundance is the place where \u201ca film premiered\u201d is the least interesting part of the story. The interesting part is who the audience decided to talk about on the way out.<\/p>\n

And right now, the audience has decided it\u2019s Wilde.<\/p>\n

Sundance gave Olivia Wilde two gifts in one weekend: applause you can\u2019t buy, and discourse you can\u2019t stop.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The only question now is which one follows her home.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
