Sinners<\/i><\/a> made history Thursday with 16 Oscar nominations \u2014 more than any film ever. The Ryan Coogler vampire horror obliterated the record of 14 held by All About Eve<\/i>, Titanic<\/i>, and La La Land<\/i>.<\/p>\n

The recognition was sweeping: Michael B. Jordan, Delroy Lindo, and Wunmi Mosaku all secured acting nods, while Ryan Coogler picked up nominations for both Director and Original Screenplay. The film earned a spot in nearly every category the studio campaigned for.<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s one performance almost entirely absent from the awards conversation: Jack O\u2019Connell<\/a>\u2018s Remmick, the Irish vampire who serves as the film\u2019s main antagonist.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not that O\u2019Connell\u2019s performance was forgettable. Ryan Coogler himself has called Remmick his favorite antagonist he\u2019s ever written. The 34-year-old British actor doesn\u2019t appear until halfway through the film, but his presence dominates the final act \u2014 traditional Irish stepdancing, a spine-chilling rendition of \u201cThe Rocky Road to Dublin,\u201d and what Screen Rant<\/i> called an \u201cincredible\u201d ability to make audiences \u201cempathize\u201d with a vampire terrorizing a Black community in 1930s Mississippi.<\/p>\n

At a time when Oscar voters claim to value cultural impact, O\u2019Connell\u2019s \u201cRocky Road to Dublin\u201d scene became one of the film\u2019s most shared moments online. TikTok exploded with recreations and reactions. The Hollywood Reporter<\/i> described his \u201ccharming, bloodsucking\u201d turn, and Collider<\/i> called him \u201ccharismatic when he isn\u2019t grinning with a mouth of shark-like fangs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet in the weeks of Sinners<\/i> awards coverage, his name has been conspicuously absent. So why the silence?<\/p>\n

One could blame the horror genre; Oscar voters have historically ignored villain performances, with Heath Ledger\u2019s Joker remaining a rare exception. Others might point to name recognition, noting that while O\u2019Connell is a BAFTA winner, he lacks the American profile of his castmates. It could even be simple campaign strategy by Warner Bros. to avoid splitting votes.<\/p>\n

But those explanations feel insufficient. The omission suggests something else entirely.<\/p>\n

Sinners<\/i> is a film about Black resilience, Black culture, and Black survival in Jim Crow Mississippi. It\u2019s a story where the blues becomes a weapon, where a juke joint becomes sanctuary, where Michael B. Jordan plays twin brothers reclaiming their hometown. The film\u2019s 16 nominations are being celebrated \u2014 rightfully \u2014 as a triumph for Black cinema.<\/p>\n

But does celebrating a white actor\u2019s performance in that story feel uncomfortable? Does spotlighting O\u2019Connell risk centering whiteness in a narrative that isn\u2019t about him? Is there a quiet understanding among critics and awards pundits that praising the white villain in a predominantly Black film reads wrong, even when the performance delivers?<\/p>\n

O\u2019Connell told Interview Magazine<\/i> that reading the Remmick role felt like \u201cthis is written for me\u201d \u2014 partly because he\u2019d done Irish dancing as a child in Derby, England. Coogler wrote Remmick as a layered exploration of how the Irish and Black communities in America were pitted against each other, despite both facing oppression. The character has thematic weight. The performance has technical skill. The cultural impact is measurable.<\/p>\n

Yet in dozens of articles about Sinners<\/i>\u2018 historic Oscar haul, O\u2019Connell\u2019s name appears rarely, if at all. Trade publications list the nominees. Entertainment outlets celebrate the records. Film critics analyze Coogler\u2019s vision and Jordan\u2019s dual performance. But the main villain who Coogler called his favorite? Near silence.<\/p>\n

Maybe it\u2019s a coincidence. Maybe it\u2019s strategic. Maybe it\u2019s uncomfortable. Maybe no one wants to be the first to say it.<\/p>\n

The 98th Academy Awards air March 15 on ABC. Whether Jack O\u2019Connell\u2019s performance is finally acknowledged\u2014or remains quietly omitted\u2014will reveal less about the quality of the film, and more about who we are allowed to praise within it.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
