Gen Z is shunning impulse spending in favor of long-term goals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/talkerresearch.com\/how-gen-z-is-proving-to-be-more-financially-stable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A new nationwide survey<\/a>\u00a0of 2,000 Gen Z Americans revealed one in three (33%) identify as planners who budget, track spending and\u00a0plan ahead, while one in four (25%) call themselves value-seekers who research and compare before making purchases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s\u00a0compared to just one in eight (12%) who rated themselves primarily as spontaneous purchasers, buying what they want when they want.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to stereotypes that paint Gen Z as frivolous spenders, the data revealed a generation\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0thoughtful,\u00a0intentional\u00a0and grounded in practicality. Conducted by Talker Research on behalf of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.affirm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Affirm<\/a>, the survey found that today\u2019s young adults are focused on building financial stability.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nearly two-thirds\u00a0(64%) said they regularly think about their financial future, and\u00a0seven in 10 (70%) described their approach to money as financially realistic (43% said realistic and 27% said a mix of idealistic and realistic).<\/p>\n<p>That realism also\u00a0shows up in\u00a0how Gen Z manages their money. In the past year,\u00a0nearly half\u00a0(45%) have contributed to savings, while about two in five sought out rewards or deals (38%), created a budget (37%)\u00a0or found ways to earn extra income through side gigs or freelance opportunities (35%).\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><b>Living With Family To Save Money<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>That sense of practicality extends into everyday life, too:\u00a0Nearly half\u00a0(45%) live with family or guardians, and about half of respondents (49%) said their current living setup is a result of trying to save money.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to food,\u00a0nearly half\u00a0(45%) mostly cook at home, versus a small number who often order takeout (9%).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In travel, just over one in four (26%) stick to strict budgets, while\u00a0nearly half\u00a0(43%) strike a balance between splurging and saving.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For fitness,\u00a0nearly half\u00a0(45%) rely on free or low-cost workouts such as outdoor activities or YouTube videos.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Thrifting is also common \u2014\u00a0nearly one\u00a0in four (24%) thrift or DIY home d\u00e9cor, two in five (40%) mix new and secondhand, and more than half (58%) apply the same approaches to clothing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More than half (52%) prefer fully in-person work, defying assumptions about Gen Z\u2019s desire for remote jobs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to how they pay, Gen Z\u2019s approach was revealed to be equally intentional. Instead of relying heavily on credit cards, they use a mix of tools to stay in control.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re\u00a0equally likely to describe credit cards as \u201crisky\u201d and \u201chelpful\u201d (both 22%), while\u00a0nearly half\u00a0(45%) said they feel most confident using debit cards.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And when they use buy now, pay later options (14%),\u00a0nearly half\u00a0(42%) of these said they do so to spread out the cost of larger purchases \u2014 another sign of careful planning rather than impulsivity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Gen Z Redefines Financial Confidence<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time to retire the Gen Z caricature,\u201d said Vishal Kapoor, SVP of Product at Affirm. \u201cGen Z\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0reckless or disengaged with their finances \u2014\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0intentional about how,\u00a0when\u00a0and why they spend. They value flexibility and transparency, using products that help them stay in control and make smart, informed choices that fit their lives.
