Disney\u2019s gone off the deep end with their woke messaging and needs to focus on the building blocks of story, so says the director of several Mouse House classics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
John Musker<\/strong> \u2014 who directed the animated versions of \u201cThe Little Mermaid,\u201d \u201cAladdin\u201d and \u201cMoana\u201d \u2014 called out the content giant during an interview with El Pa\u00eds<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>\u2026 basically saying Disney\u2019s gone overboard on getting their message across.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n JM says, \u201cI think they need to do a course correction a bit in terms of putting the message secondary, behind entertainment and compelling story and engaging characters.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/p>\n To be fair, Musker doesn\u2019t call out making the movies woke by name \u2026 but, read between the lines and you can see he thinks his former employer got their priorities backward.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n He even calls out the most recent adaptation of \u201cThe Little Mermaid\u201d \u2026 telling EP he thinks the remake lost a little something when they played down the father-daughter dynamic \u2014 while blasting the CGI Sebastian the Crab.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n John directed \u201cThe Princess and the Frog\u201d BTW \u2026 and, he makes it clear he\u2019s not saying diversity isn\u2019t important in animation \u2014 just that creators shouldn\u2019t sacrifice a quality script to check a few boxes.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n As for the new Moana live-action film coming out \u2026 Musker says he\u2019s got nothing to do with the flick \u2014 but, he hopes it turns out well.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n Bottom line \u2026 Disney\u2019s messages aren\u2019t hitting for some people \u2014 including former collaborators!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n\n
